Will there be a Europa Universalis IV?

Since Magna Mundi is canceled, I was wondering if there is any plan for a EUIV. I like EUIII a lot, but I think it could be improved in the way of making things more complex and advanced as Magna Mundi set it out to be. More historically plausible, because in many scenarios the political map of the world just looks weird. THis quetion is probably more adressed to Paradox Interactive. Thanks for the reply and the games.

I really hope youre right. I call dibs on alpha/beta test phase, would kill to be on test team for EU4.

I would doubt it, they will probably do quite a bit of DLC for CK2 then expansions/ dlc for Vic2 and Hoi3, and if they do Eu4 they will probably be making major changes to the engine which means Eu4 would take even longer than most other Pdox games. 2015 at the earliest if they begin soon.

From what ive seen, it looks like there are at least two major teams: 1. which i think Doomdark leads, those are the guys working on CK2 (including expansions) and 2. which i think Johan leads (or participates or whatever) which works on V2. Apart from that, there seem to be a bunch of people going between projects (designers, coders, scripters, researchers etc).

Some weeks ago i also saw a vague tweet where Johan said hes coding on a new unannounced project - we dont know what it is, and it wont be announced until july (i think they said until some big game expo, E3 or whatever is in a month or so).

I think the question is when, not if. Eu is very succesful and has many expansions. À game which has many expansions proofs it is à succesful game. And succesful games get sequels. I also think eu is there flagship game. Eu1 is When i got hooked (many, many years ago) and is for many people i know the best alternative for simpler games, like civ. In uni (i studied history) i got most classmates also hooked on eu. Its for à lot of people the best game around but still can be improved. Better speed, better graphics and most importantly à lot of good suggestions for gameplay from the loyal community.

All we can do it wait until Gamescon for their announcement. I am going to put my money on a new Europa Universalis, or a Europa Universalis Rome. Vicky just got AHD, so I doubt it will be them, and CK2 has their expansion.

I seriously hope the announcement will be a new Rome game, but I have doubts -- it seems a bit soon. An expansion for Victoria seems pretty likely (it's been stated they'd like to do another, and it would probably focus on the most lacking part of Vicky, the WW1 period) which I'd buy in a heartbeat. Paradox isn't done with EU3, though -- and I'm sure there'll be another expansion before a sequel. In approximate order of likelihood:

1. Vicky 2 Expansion
2. EU3 Expansion
3. Rome 2

Still, here's hoping for a new Rome with some of CK2's excellent systems!

I think it's pretty clear that it's not an expansion. Vicky, HoI and CK have all had new iterations fairly recently, so I think it's either EU4, EU:R2 or something new entirely (like Sengoku). Rome seems rather unlikely though.

Johan is the man behind every Europa Universalis, so my guess is that he's working on EU4. That and the relatively recent pool about whether or not EU4 should have multiple start dates (officially the pool was about EU3 preferences).

Europa Universalis 2 came out in 2001, so a 6 year gap between 2 and 3.
Victoria 1 came out in 2003 so a 7 year gap between 1 and 2.
Hearts Of Iron 2 came out in 2005, so a 4 year gap there.
Crusader Kings came out in 2004, so an 8 year gap between 1 and 2.

So a new instalment in their series releases on average every 6,25 years. Based on that EU4 should release in 2013. Which sounds right because it should be EU's turn to get a new instalment out of their 4 majors.

In order for an expansion to be in the works the last expansion has to be finished(i.e. fully patched). In order for a sequel to be in the works the last game has to be fully finished. By making 5.2 they have proven that EU3 is not finished. I expect at least another patch for for DW before they either create another EU3 expansion or move on to EU4.


And on a new V2 expansion, good God! They just released AHD not four months ago! The people at Paradox do have lives and families they'd like to see some day!

EU3 is very good, but I think there is little juice left in it. There must be something freshly designed in this era. But I think that EU3 lacks a lot in flavour, smth that MMP adds(albeit inefficiently from both design and performance point of view).

DW was announced before HttT 4.1b was finished. So that isn't necessarily the case.

Also V2:AHD was released without releasing a final 1.4 patch (only public betas) which could very easily happened with EU3 4.1b as well if it wasn't for a lot of complaints in the forum about it.

I've mentioned before though that I think that's a bad path to follow. If they are working on both EU3 5.2 and an expansion or EU4 at the same time (at least beyond the design phase) it seems like a lot of inefficiency and room for error (needing to fix newly-reported EU3 bugs in two different projects and so on). They should get the EU3 code to it's best possible state before building on top of it.

I would go for Rome 2.

Roman Empire is a popular setting among strategy gamers, which will make it appealing to PI also. Now that we have seen a full round of CK-EU-V-HoI sequels, it is again Rome's turn.

As said, EU4 is only a matter of time. In fact, it could well be that we see Rome2 and EU4 in pretty fast succession.

And I totally agree, EU3 seems to have reached its limits already and it would probably be for the best to start from a fresh and clear table. In DW, there are quite a few new mechanics that don't work all that well (the horde mechanic being the worst). An expansion would have to sort those problems out on top of giving something new, valuable content.
