In the end the best thing to do is to publish the games in physical and in digital form. People without the internet or capability to buy digitally can also have their copy of the game. Which means more profit.

I'll probably buy digital copy just so that I can get the game the moment it comes out. Then I'll go to a shop and buy myself a physical one to touch and admire. :D

I can afford to treat myself to a book or PC game every now and again but to commit to ongoing internet bills on monthly contracts is not affordable at this time for me. So please don't belittle people who are obviously not as fortunate as you are.

You know, that surprises me actually. My internet connection actually costs about 60% of what I can spend on non-necessities monthly. I belong to one of the poorest demographics in sweden, students who are not living in dorms (My sig is outdated, I do not work with tech support during the semester).
And not even having an internet connection, I cannot just see how that is done today. Should I lose my internet connection I would actually lose money over it, as I would have to travel way more and pay my bills through the bank physically and they charge quite a bit for that. My phone bill would also sky-rocket.

It might be that I am biased giving where I live but I view internet as a necessity, at same level as heating and electricity. I also have a severe dislike for retailers, they are all about overcharging for games and driving their prices up and they do what they can to reduce the share of the cake that those that actually develop games get.

I guess I might as well state for comparison that I have a 2M connection, and the price is included in the rent (of a price-subsidized student apartment, but still).

As for digital sales surpassing physical sales, the article linked claimed physical copies only accounted for 20% of sales with subscription revenues included). I recall reading another article, where digital sales in either Europe or Finland (can't remember) had reached over 50% of total sales sometime last year, and I don't think that included subscriptions.

A really major reason for publishers to want to move to digital retail is actually the used-games market. The publishers and makers of the game get 0 extra revenue for games that are sold a second or third time (or even more).

It is quite an interesting debate that while PC games are trying to go all digital and also the publishing companies promoting e-readers and e-books etc as it not only decreases distribution costs and thus increase profits even if the retail price is slightly lower the used market is a factor too.

The movie industry however is still not convinced but more and more they seem to be accepting digital distribution as these other industries lead the way.

Personally I will never buy from Steam- a few too many times their servers have been down or just caused annoying lags when I wanted to play a Steam driven game plus on my laptop I am not always connected to the internet every 2 days some games require.

Gamersgate though so far is perfect model of online distribution to me as far as digital rights- although I think it could borrow from Amazon a bit more about how to link products in categories and also to reviews etc.

just to add to the internet aspect of this : could you imagine downloading a full version game on Dial-up? 56k if you're lucky. There are still people out there who can get a great computer but can't get high speed internet.

Its not just lack of capability to buy off the internet as that is a major issue as while highspeed internet may be a cheap reality in the EU for most of the world its an upper class luxury alone and quite often with pay by the 500mb rates that would make P.C. game downloads extremely expensives and with time-outs and other limitations on downloads digital copies are an impossibility on dial-up and then theres people who dont have the internet which causes even more trouble.
But there is also willingness, while most people would never consider piracy if the industry goes digital it will become tennable, as if you dont have much money you will be willing to buy a computer game, you wont if its a theoretical digital copy. As ive said before if its only digital then you can buy it but you cant own it and petty material pride is really at the heart of most men. But if the gaming industry goes platonic than Piracy will rise and expendentionally as there will be no motive for those who struggle to pay to save up for as it has no physical existance.
And as for the man on the street, the bulk of humanity cannot be represented in sales statistics because the bulk do not buy a computer game every month and those few that do offset sales accounts so rising sales and percents mean nothing, the average person will not buy off the internet, they might if the game also exists on the shelves but is cheaper on the internet but not if it exists on the internet alone, as it gives the impression that it is not serious and furthermore that is money going to nothing, and on the whole people dont like to see their money turn into nothing. Even if its just a small physical token like a cd in a plastic case it is still something that actually exists and can be displayed with pride of property.
The move to digital sales is entirelly driven by the industry, the great companies that do not care about the costumer just the product, the E.A.s of the world. Who are limiting avialability and pretending that the change is representive of the peoples wants, the democracy of capitalism and the failed attempts to thrawt the control of corporate monopolies. Paradox stands as a challange to the controled market, the distributer decieded sales and the pre-planned top-twenties but by turning to digital sales it is unwittingly supportingly the conspiracy that stands to destroy it.
People dont want to waste their money and people who have not heard of Paradox will not buy their games if their not on shelves, to the average person looking at the computer games that are sold on the internet they are not worth anything, most of them are carbon copies of other games, cheaply produced and badly coded. And the eyes of someone who has not spent a large amount of time becoming accustomed to the names of the gaming industry and a game sold on the internet alone will appear as one of those. And beyond that most people wont even think to look on the internet, they might pass a computer game retailer and take a chance and look in it, they might see it on the shelf of a large department store. But they will never look at an internet download site.
If its only digital than it is limited to those who go looking for, who already know about it. The most of men will never even consider it.

I like boxes:)

The people have spoken, we want our boxes!
(Hey, RE Lee gets away with this stuff. :p )

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

I definitely agree with Orinsul though. While fans buy it on release, it's everyone else that is likely to buy it in the long term (from my opinion) seem less likely to purchase things in digital format.

The biggest problem of online purchases I think is that you can find a cheaper physical copy off Ebay eventually. I admit it, that's how I got EUIII and EUIII Complete, dirt cheap on ebay. I'm sure I'm not alone in this. (Though I do plan to buy on release from retail Victoria II. :p )

I certainly hope there will be a boxed edition. Some of us cannot afford incredibly high-speed internet, especially in countries where it isn't subsidized. In my opinion, we "backwards" people deserve good Paradox games, too.

If boxed distribution is too capital-intensive for a game which might not actually be profitable, could an on-demand system be implemented? If this game is like other modern games at all, it'll be several GB in size, correct? I would have to leave my computer on overnight for that.

Actually, the majority of sales are digital, overwhelmingly so. http://www.gamerzines.com/pc/news/boxed-sales-only-20-of-pc.html
"The PC Gaming Alliance's (PCGA) latest report has concluded that boxed game sales only equate to 20% of all PC gaming purchases worldwide, confirming that digital is now clearly the primary method of distribution.

"The most notable trend in recent years has been the movement to digital distribution and payment for subscriptions, and the growing popularity with consumers of online games as a service," said PCGA president and Intel director, Randy Stude.
..."

That's 20% of game sales in terms of units (i.e. weighting all sales equally) rather than in terms of money (i.e. weighting by transaction price), and it includes repeated payments for MMORPGs and downloads of cheap casual games alongside purchases of physical copies of new, 'serious' games.

EU3 is less than a gigabit and EU:Rome and HOI3 are both a little over one. So I'm imagining that Vicky2 won't be more than 2GB at max.

Victoria2 may be out in a box, most definitely will be in several territories, but not everywhere in the world.

Here's hoping that the mountain clad North will be one of those territories. I would very much like to have my V2 in a good ole box... perhaps even with a bust of Bismarck or some such.

You won't enjoy most games from us then.

Well, if I can order it from amazon.co.uk I'll be happy. Gamersgate doesn't look so bad, but I still like to prepared for the day the internet has collapsed under its own weight and I need to reinstall the game. :D

Better save the patches on disc as well or you're forever stuck with the release version after that. ;)
