When I tried CK1 I had a lot of trouble telling muslim nations apart since so many of their CoA were similar(so many crescent moons). And since many countries end up a bit scattered about it can be surprising when you find out the tiny county you were gonna take is actually a huge scattered duchy(I know their are many ways to find this out but it does catch you off guard at times). I forget what the christian nations had but it was definitely easier to tell them apart.
Well I guess that your problem was just (and in this sense I agree with you) that with the Muslim "circle" CoA it was really difficult to distinguish a beydom from an emirate or a Muslim Kingdom (the difference, if I am not wrong, was in the thickness and the color of the edge), while Christian shields varied more both in size and in shape (at least from county level to upper levels, whilst the differences between kingdoms and Duchies weren't that obvious, especially at lower zoom scales).
Another problem was that the "liege" of a county wasn't clearly indicated (you had to look into the ruler's profile, or search for the half-hidden information on the left menu : "XXX is part of the Emirate of/Kingdom of YYY".
This latter problem should have been solved, because, looking at the video DD on Relations, I see that liege will be clearly indicated (as a crown and a CoA in the Province screen), at a glance, when we click on a province.
For the former problem, I guess we should wait to see what artwork PI is preparing for Muslims - until now, we only saw the Christian part, but I'm kind of optimistic about this.
And, most of all, from all the screenshots and the videos we have seen until now, it seems that only independent rulers of all levels will have their CoA shown as a shield on the map.
It should be easier, then, to verify if the "tiny county" that caught your eyes is ruled by an independent and weak bey (which should then have his own shield on the map) or is the furthest western isolated province of Egypt, who won't obviously like you to declare war on their vassal and send you an army of 30000 men...
