Hello, PDX fans and devs! I really enjoyed yesterday's announcement, all aboard the hype train! Anyway, I am creating this thread so the community can discuss their thoughts about the Empire of Brazil in the game. It would be lovely to see also the devs getting some inspiration from this post. I hope we will be able to see a much more flavored Brazil already in the base game when it launches in comparison to Vicky 2!

I mean, PDX has been including Portuguese-Brazilian translation in their new and most recent games and based on the devs desire to improve gameplay for the world outside Europe in the new Vicky 3, I think they will give the single monarchy in the Americas a lot of events, unique groups of interest (political parties?), decisions, etc. What I really want to be able to do as Brazil in the game is to change the historical path of the country, heavily industrialise it and turn it into a great power but that was little bit difficult in the previous game. So, I am curious to see if we are going to have any sort of new systems or decisions to improve our country's backwardness, precarious infrastructure and lack of resources. I have so many questions, because we don't know a lot about the different game's systems yet... and I think those questions should also apply to other potential great powers or even potential secondary powers that don't have a good starting position in 1836 , didn't have a marvelous time nor grew a lot during the XIXth century, such as Persia, Vietnam, Argentina, Mexico, Spain, China, Poland, Greece, etc.

Anyway, I think Brazil had a lot of potential to grow in this time period. I hope we can decide to invest in changing some of the raw resources that our provinces produce, in attracting immigrants by offering them cheap land, in making deals/trade routes to import essential industrial resources (Brazil doesn't have a lot of coal, for example), in creating a better national educational system, etc. Of course, to be able to change your country's background by that much you will need a lot of money, probably from a very rich Great Power eager to have a South American partner or a counterpart to USA's hegemony over the Americas? We will also need support inside our political system and the interest groups.

Besides that, in 1836, Brazil was a very young nation: it went through an independence war, a war against uruguayans (Cisplatina). Also, by the year the game starts the country was in a regency and it had a lot of revolts and civil wars going on. To sum up, I hope playing as Brazil (or any sort of minor or secondary power with considerable potential) will be a lot of fun.

I hope we have a nice discussion here, I am a Brazilian historian, so it would be nice to share and learn anything with you guys!

I don't want to go into too much detail on what content we have at this stage but I can say we do have the Ragamuffin War as that was going on at the start of the game.

I definitely hope it gets a lot of flavour! One of my favourite things with these games is learning about events in countries I don't know much about and Brazil is one I'm really looking forward to play.

hahah it's the first time I'm reading the name of this revolt in English, loved it
I'm also hoping that Brazil gets some flavour from start. We were at the end of the regency by 1836, lots of rebellions going on, talks about centralization/decentralization and the two main parties (conservatives and liberals) actually taking shape during this time. Then we'll have all the discussions about slavery, foreign policy in the Prata, we'll have the war against Rosas in 1851, then intervention in Uruguayan Civil War, Paraguayan War, all the way to the army becoming more political and the coup that declared the republic - btw, Brazilian republic in the time period (post-1889) is another thing that can get some depth alright.

I always struggled to imagine ambitions of my great Brazil.. how plausible is reunification with that small european Brazil? And should all white portuguese-speaking people be portuguese?
Which main concerns should led to possible empire crumble?

US-Brazil competition for immigrants should be real fun!

Brazil (and Mexico) had the potential to become a GP in the time period covered by this game, if there is a Paradox game where Latin America can become relevant...that game is Victoria 3.

Brazil definitely have unique flavour...

The Confederados were some 10,000 to 20,000 Confederates who moved to Brazil, chiefly to the state of São Paulo, from the Southern United States after the American Civil War. Although many eventually returned to the United States after Reconstruction, some remained and descendants of Confederados can be found in many cities throughout Brazil. The city of Americana in Brazil was founded by these immigrants.
Some dixie colonies were created in Mexico and Belize too!

There's a lot of interesting possibilities for Brazil in the XIX Century, i'm glad that this time we will actually play with Emperor Pedro II. There are many ways to guide the nation and I hope the Regional Power mechanic may simulate well the imperialistic interventions that Brazil made in the Rio de La Plata region.

I second to the notion that smaller/less influential nations should be able to develop and shine. Brazil, for instance, has always been a country with enormous potential. But building a great power, or even a decent modern, progressive, industralising 19th century Brazil in the game should be very hard thing to do. Brazil was constraied by its poor demographics (low population compared to area, 'poor quality' of population - slavery and lack of education), political system (again slavery and powerful landowners, decentralised state - all disincentivising modernisation) and poor geography (lack of navigable rivers, almost no natural harbours, mostly mountains/hills or rainforests/bogs - hard to develop infrastructure, abovementioned lack of important resources like coal or iron). To sum it up, it should be possible to make 2nd US out of Brazil but it should be very hard.

I agree it should not be easy. The player would have to, first of all, abolish slavery - which, if the game follows Brazil's irl tendencies, should be very hard to do - then consolidate the territory (lots of rebellions going on), then literally create an industrialist class, fight the interest of landowners, increase imports expenses to industrialize, etc. etc. We did have a problem with poor demographics - interiorization is a thing from the 20th century here - so exploring all the resourcers should be hard too.
I just disagree with your point that Brazil had (os has) poor geography. We have a lot of navigable rivers and some of the biggest basins in the world - of course, as Brazil is a big country, some areas indeed lack navigable waters, but overall I wouldn't say there's a deficiency there. In 1836, we also had 3 of the main harbours in the Americas: Rio, Salvador and Recife (specially Rio). Most of the Empire's income came from Rio's customs house. Of course these harbours lost economic power over time, but that should be something the player could be able to prevent.

In a way, Brazil of Vic 2 is a bit like Italy of 1936 in HoI4: a local power house that you can get into an early war with, where you are not seriously threatened. A country you can learn the core concepts with (Industrialization a bit later than with Belgium, but still timely enough) in a "safe" location, with expansion possibilities nearby. Also supports both land army and a navy.

I am planning to play Brazil as my first game in Vic 3 to see if the noob friendliness is still there (and also I just plain like the country).

I don't want to go into too much detail on what content we have at this stage but I can say we do have the Ragamuffin War as that was going on at the start of the game.
Can you play as the Ragamuffin/Farrapos/rebels/Rio Grande do Sul? If so, I'll be playing in Brazil for a long time, multiple times. Not only as the glorious Ragamuffins, but also as the glorious Pedro II. Well, regardless, I'll be playing in Brazil a lot.

One thing I would love to see presented is the scenario that the Empire disintegrated in its various provinces, or even that the Empire of Amazonas was created in the North of the country, with the daughter of Dom Pedro I as empress.
