Vlad_Dracula,

Ptolemaic Egypt and the Seleucid Empire ought to be substantially stronger than Rome at game start, as should, for that matter, Carthage.

If this is not the case, I'll be disappointed. Rome was, but it wasn't inevitable.

Anything that doesn't make the Easterners field all-ranged-cavalry armies due to being most effective while the Roman legions are composed of Incendiary Pigs is ok with me. :D

...More to the point, if there are ideas, policies, government types, natural resources, or whatever that make the cavalry of some nations substantially more powerful than others, I hope that the cost matches. For a game set in the Republican era, I really, truly, hope that just about every playable entity will be best off fielding primarily infantry with smaller complements of missile units and cavalry.

with such a powerful cavalry and all the eastern ressources and without any fired pigs in front of them, why Persia didn't roam the world (and the Japan) ?
I hope for balance :)

...with the drawback of political instability and a constant need to rely on exceptional monarchs, I would hope.

Well, there's always the option to make heavy cavalry as ridiculously expensive as it was IRL. But hopefully, this will also be tied somehow to the population system, with cavalry units draining your (preciously few) aristocrats, while infantry units and skirmishers would be drawn from your (much more numerous) peasants and middle class.

not sure that can be implemented. i think johan mentioned only 3 levels of inhabitants: slaves, citizens and free subjects. not sure aristocracy fits in somewhere in there

My guess is that this will be the case, at least early on... sort of like it was in CK, but hopefully more detailed.

How they'll handle mercenaries and “professional” soldiers is another matter though.

Everyone but the Romans and Greeks (discounting Macedon) should have good cavalry...

IIRC Theban heavy cav was good, also Thessalian (which served for Alex the Great as well)

Du not forget the elks:

Julius Caesar said:
There are also [animals] which are called elks. The shape of these, and the varied color of their skins, is much like roes, but in size they surpass them a little and are destitute of horns, and have legs without joints and ligatures; nor do they lie down for the purpose of rest, nor, if they have been thrown down by any accident, can they raise or lift themselves up. Trees serve as beds to them; they lean themselves against them, and thus reclining only slightly, they take their rest; when the huntsmen have discovered from the footsteps of these animals whither they are accustomed to betake themselves, they either undermine all the trees at the roots, or cut into them so far that the upper part of the trees may appear to be left standing. When they have leant upon them, according to their habit, they knock down by their weight the unsupported trees, and fall down themselves along with them.
