I'd like to install the Beta patch, but also continue my 1.04 save game; will the benefits of the patch still work if I load that old save game after patching...? I assume not, but I thought I'd check...

It's always worth a try, though it's quite likely to either work oddly or not work at all. For example, if your 1.04a save had a Crusade ongoing, it will prevent the cyclic crusades and prolly crash at some point too.
And after you tried post here what result you had, might be useful for some other folks too!
