EU: Role only had one ship class trieme and not much to do other than fight, blockade and transport troops. Will this be different in Imperator?

Naval battles would be important for survival of Greece. If the trade routes are in, it would also mean Illyrian pirates would thrive, while Romans could starve from lack of Egyptia/African grain shipments.

Those major cities of Sabeans and Nabateans literally exist on sea trade between India and Egypt/Rome.

They should look at Total Wars and especially mods like Europa Barbarorum and Divide et Impera for ship types.

Naval power is critical for doing the Punic Wars properly. And if you don't do the Punic Wars properly there's no reason to even do a Rome game.

But protecting trade and power projection in general is facilitated by having superior navy, which essentially comes down to fighting (and winning) naval battles. Am I wrong? That's why other than having more types of ships and a decent UI (and tactics) for naval battles I don't know what could be done to expand naval warfare from mechanical point of view.

There were only two ways to prevent rampant piracy and sea marauding in the Mediterranean

a)
Keep an active, standing fleet with decent number of ships capable of fighting, patrolling the routes.

b) Take over every inch of land around the sea and surround it completely. If the pirates can't even find a place to land, what else could they do other than surrender or starve?

....Guess which option Romans took.

Not the second half of option b in any case. Most of the time they tried to beach the pirate ships (by surrounding them with their large standing fleets) and then defeat them on land.

Indeed. It was a combined effort. By the late republic Rome did have a sufficiently large fleet, and the tactic was to chase the pirates around in a direction until they ran into a coastal region. They would either surrender with their ships, or inevitably run to the land, where the local garrison Cohorts (or troops of the client/ally) were called in and made short work of them after a while.
