Will I need an electron microscope to read the text in this game?

You probably won't need a microscope to see the text, howver if you are one of the unfortunate souls like myself who have a surround sound headset you will probably need a hearing aid after initially loading the game for the first time after each fresh install. Me and my cat have been terrified by the incredibly high default music volume during launch
Doesnt your headset have a volume control?

Well I will be happy as long as the game support 4:3 monitors as I use 1280x1024 resolution and these days I am starting to see a few games (City : Skylines for one) that dont support this resolution natively which means I have to play in a windows as with C:Sky (which put me off the game greatly) or my monitor stretches the graphics a bit.

4:3 is getting less and less popular but it is still used by many gamers so its very shortsighted to not support this. When I designed websites it was normal to design for multiple popular resolutions including 4:3 and 16:9 not to mention tablets and smartphones. I hope Paradox is going to do this with HOI4 because it will be extremely disappointing if the game looks rubbish. I cant afford to get a new monitor for a few years yet (so my wife says) so yeah lets have thorough resolution support from your games please if C:Sky is anything to go by I am a little concerned. heres hoping I dont have to use that 2hr refund policy on Steam for this game!

Mild necro, because this is something that matters a fair bit and I don't think we've had a conclusive answer either way?

Many now have monitors with high resolutions, but the non-scaling nature of the interfaces of previous PDX games means its almost impossible to use native res. I have to use a lower resolution when I run EU4 for example to ensure GUI elements are big enough. This prevents me from using borderless or windowed modes and mess up/move content on my two other monitors temporarily because of the resolution change. Its annoying.

In this day and age its standard to have a fully scalable UI. At A BARE MINIMUM I think there should be two UI modes; standard and oversized, the latter designed for 1440p/4k or people with 1080p who are going blind I guess. While Clauswitz may not yet handle fully scalable (though I hope it does) - I cannot fathom a single technical reason why two fixed UI size modes could be possible.

And while we're at it, bonus question, if its possible for HOI4, is it possible to backport whatever makes it happen to EU4?

Mild necros about relevant issues are not always bad. The alternative is starting a new thread about the same topic and losing whatever relevant perspective the first contained.

Anyone who tried to play CK2 or EU4 on a 4K TV or a 1440p monitor would likely like to know what to expect, UI-wise, from HOI4 and Stellaris.

This is how insulting Paradox is in regards to this issue. Facterio - a super complex strategy game made by ONE GUY has interface scaling to deal with this exact issue (see screenshot). Paradox makes millions in pure profit every year (as told by the CEO), and they can't be bothered to make changes to help us out. There are countless numbers of games nowadays that either have full interface scaling, or a checkbox that is a set increase the interface and font size by a specific amount if you run at a high resolution. Heck Dungeons of Dredmor had this 5 years ago and it too was made by a tiny team. Why did they add it? Because a few players asked and the 2-man team behind the game and Gaslamp Games decided their customers were worth it. PDX has an EA attitude now. If they don't think they can get away with charging money in a DLC (I'm so desperate I'd pay $50 for it), they won't allocate resources or time to it.

Aleria - yes it can be done. Modders have done 80% of the work on EU IV in the past. As has been shown by modders, it can be done, but it can't be integrated properly without Paradox's help.

Yeah, I have to say, this really seems like a small change in this day and age. How hard can it be to add? Many people will appreciate it, even if they dont notice right now, they will when you add scalability. The UI looks way better when it's the proper size.

Even some small indie team manage to easily add scalable UI and its pretty much automatically present in games from larger companies, so IMO Paradox management should wake up and spend some money on this - its something that many of us (paying customers) expect to have in game released in 2016.

Not sure why your post received so many dislikes. I've got a 1920x1080 (or whatever it is) monitor and I definitely agree the text in EU4 is displayed too small when I set the game to that resolution. Surely there could be a "larger text" option?
Have you never gone looking for a solution? This mod has existed for a very long time: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=329756290

It changes the font, increases the size, and makes the text bold. I expect if people have this problem with HOI4 then we'll see a similar mod for that.

It's Ironman compatible btw.

In games which are well designed, things like UI shouldnt be a problem even years after release - especially when last paid DLC was released 2-3 years ago.

And even HoI3 had problems with UI / text size on some 1080p high DPI monitors.

PI is no longer tiny company with minimal resources, so IMO its reasonable, to expect things like modern (scalable) UI....

I need to send 3DO an angry letter, scolding them about their poor foresight regarding the Heroes III UI...

Yep, even on 1440p I need to physically bring the monitor closer to me to play games like HOI3. No other game released within the last 10 years makes me do this. I realise they probably need to redo the art assets but........physically moving my monitor 3 inches from my face feels very awkward. And yes, I do have good vision. I would outright refuse to play game like HOI3 on a 4k monitor.

Okay as a coder this sort of comment irritates me. The font system is often the basis upon which a load of other systems are built. All sorts of text layout / translation / orphan words systems will have been created on top of the font system and it's them that takes time to replace. Their current system has been tested by years in the marketplace, just throwing it away and writing it again is not a simple decision. it's like asking that a building replace their foundations - it's a lot harder than you think.

All that said Stellaris has shown they have better support for expanded character sets and from Podcat's comments they have improved the current system so it works on larger screens.

A legacy code base can be your greatest asset and your worst enemy. Often at the same time.
