Will I have to reinstall when the patch comes out

If I recall correctly, the patch will only install over an unmodified version of the game. Is this correct?

If that is the case then all the manual bug fixes I've done and all the AI file modifications will require me to reinstall the game to get a fresh start (or use my backup folders I guess if I can remember everything I've changed).

That seems harsh, but I'm 99% I had to do that to install EU2 patches when I fixed the stability and event issues.

I doubt this is correct

All patches from paradox only rewrites the files

so unless you make backup you will lose all your work, that is correct but you wont have to reinstall the game

But you could backup your files and copy them back later

Actully from my previous experince with paradox games if the files haas been changed it will not be overwritten so you might have to yes

I am not sure about the technical aspect of the reinstall. However, on a practical matter, if you have created or installed fixes to text files, then these files are likely to be overwritten. So, it would be prudent to back these files up before installing a patch. Then to evaluate the patch files vs your files to see what you need or want to reapply.

Btw, the technical behavior of applying the patch may depend on the publisher's approach to patching (ie, nothing to do with Paradox, and it may vary depending on who your publisher is). I guess only experience will tell...

Only patches that check the size and hash (usually md5) do not overwrite if the ID is inconsistent (sic?)

The patches from paradox (not strategy first or other publisher) are a bunch of files compressed that you extract on its directory, so unless the files are as READ ONLY they will be replaced

I'll wager dollars to doughnuts that a Paradox patch will not overwrite a modified file.

I just tried it with EU2 and sure enough, my modifications to the religious.csv rile and the Turkish event file caused it to not install.

If it comes out as an installer and not a zip file I think its odds on that you are right. We always get zip or rar files in beta and these are ok.
