Hoi4 will be an open ended game and not stick to actual historic events? I haven't played any hoi game yet but am very interested in this new one. I read on this forum about a previous game on hoi3 where someone played Hungary (maybe it was a mod, didn't think Hungary would be playable) and they invaded eastern Poland and prevented Germany from invading Russia and had to start again. There was another similar senario in France also. Is it possible for Germany to ally with Russia and invade the West or visa versa? Or will the story be pretty much written in stone and you just go through the motions?

Cheers,

Rusty

Yes it will be open ended.

Taken from the HOI 3 wiki: "Hearts of Iron III allows the player to take control of almost any nation that existed during the period of 1936–1948, guiding it through World War II.[4] A variety of decisions regarding the armed forces, production, research, diplomacy, politics and espionage is the focus of the game."

Most or all of that still applies. You can play any nation, and you can prepare for the war in anyway that you wish. Including but not limited to producing goods only to sell to the side you want to win, and trying to never get your country in the fight.

I hope so. HOI3 was annoying in that regard: the slightest veer off course (or even the AI itself doing something weird ;) ) could ruin an entire game because the AI didn't know how to react. Here's hoping (and believing) HOI4 will function better in that regard :) .

I read on this forum about a previous game on hoi3 where someone played Hungary (maybe it was a mod, didn't think Hungary would be playable)

Hungary most definitely is playable in HoI III. Even the small countries of Luxembourg and Albania are playable and could be used for some really interesting stuff. I fully expect them to be playable in HoI IV as well.

As for the open endedness. A lot of the real history was scripted as decisions. But it is still possible to generate some weird alternate history in HoI III. (Apart from the obvious possibility that the Axis powers might win.) You can state a coup in the US bringing them into the Axis. You can play a peaceful Germany and never invade Poland or annex Austria. Regardles of the code you can count on the ingenuity of the players to fabricate the strangest things.

You are referring to multiplayer games? Is that a strong feature in the hoi series? I have only played multiplayer games with bf2 and WoW and everytime I try with games like total war it never eventuates. Do people prefer simgle or multiplayer in hoi?

Hungary was very certainly "playable" in HOI3, but a lot more so in the earlier expansions than in TFH. The overly scripted wargoals, and the removal of emphasis on historical "cores", made them a lot less interesting in the last expansion. It was also very easy to break the event chains for GER with them, leading to a brain-dead Axis without a lot of its "freebies", which gets steamrolled early when the SU starts to build up. A few countries ran afoul of the wargoals, making them all but pointless unless you "meta-gamed" around them.

He's probably talking about singleplayer. Also in Hearts of Iron games you can play as any country, America, Canada, Hungary, Nepal, etc.
In regards to it being open ended, HoI3 was rather railroaded, but they've said it will be closer to Darkest Hour in terms of openness, and in Darkest Hour bloody anything can happen, it's why DH is my personal favourite HoI. If you want to win as Republican Span and join the Allies, and fight the Japanese, you can do that.
