Online will be good, think about it, you are building a city with your friends. That will be fun. But there should be a singleplayer mode too or the game will like "the latest simcity" ; "game cannot open due to no reply from the server". In EU4, there was a option "players can play the same country", I meant that.

For once I will kind of stick up for SC2013 here, sort of. One of the reasons I think you will find SC2013 cities are so small is because of course the same engine has to cope with the online multiplayer mode as well. I've not done multiplayer in SC2013 but I'd imagine if you have 2 or more cities being built and simulated at the same time it means you have to cut down on the amount of sim being done for each individual city, hence they're smaller.

I understand there is always a compromise and you cant have it both ways with huge cities, with huge populations and also simulate all the things people do in your city....certainly not on the scale that so many people seem to want.....eg I want all the stats and tracking info of Tropico, bundled with the huge populations of SimCity, and with huge sized maps that allow for multiple cities and multiplayer on top of it. Its just way too much for any PC to handle.

Personally I feel C:SL is going to be a really nice compromise between all those extremes. Its offering a decent sized map that will allow for large metroplis cities, or smaller more specialized cities, and will sim up to around 1 million real cims/sims without any fudging of the numbers. I really dont think this game would work that well if an online multiplayer mode was included, I'm glad its single player only because it suites what this game is about....which is the ability to create your own personalized map, a city to a similar scale of the old SimCity games, and most people really don't want that city messed with by someone else in multiplayer. The only exception to that may be coop play where you both/all work on the one city at a time.

Please no online. We have learnt our lesson from SC2013. Cities were started and abandoned making regions dull and non interactive: reward system failed: the great works was little more than a gimmick....

No, city building is an intensely single player game. Its about you designing your own desires and dealing with the day to day issues of city planning. Its not about what your neighbour is doing. Maybe when PCs can run at 10Ghz neural/quantum CPU and everyone has 40mb+ connections, it can be looked at again. Untiil then it shoudl be left alone.

I think city building sims have always been singleplayer kind of games. Although it might be fun, I don't think people will be able to build in the same city properly. There will be too many bugs. Maybe the economy of the game can be based on other player's cities in multiplayer.

only thing i want for online is mabey a world market, just so the prices on things change.

I will say back in 2010 Cities XL had an ok MP where you could supply other citys with resource contracts. costs 8 dollars a month back then, was kind of fun. but they soon took it offline. I payed for it. I think they handeled it quite well, citys were not on the same map, just an on-line globe You picked your spot. Other then city contracts and a world market wasn't much different then SP. Thats how it should be, I don't need to see what someone elses' city looks like, i just need to know if you want to buy oil or not, or what your city can supply. I dont need to hear about you sending me an out of sync fire truck i don't need.

Sim city 2013 is not amazingly fun even if your neighbor is another human, so basically the only fun thing would be a world market. SC has a world market but the game itself is too shallow to care about it.

I think what the OP is trying to ask about is the DRM on CS, will it be always online, will we need a stable internet connection to play the game or is it what i am guessing that as long as you activated it on steam you can still play the game without a connection?

I think this is a good idea, and I believe was tried in Anno 2070? I've yet to see it done right, but propagating new pricing or events based on other cities would be interesting.

E.g. CO collects anonymous statistics on average supply/demand of goods in cities being played each week. That impacts prices paid in the following week. It could also impact events propagated out to players - such as more extreme weather events if everyone is spamming fossil fuel energy sources. Big change, so perhaps something to consider for a patch.

At launch the only online feature will be sharing mods via steam workshop. But who knows, maybe if there's enough interest we'll expand into this in the future :)

Apart from my personal taste/opinion (which is that games should focus on either single or multiplayer and that only very few games can do both in a good and interesting way), I think it would be better for C:S (in terms of sells) if that developing time were spent on other things (Seasons, regions or other features).

Honestly I would not expect CSL to head into an online mode in any near future unless there's an unprecedented amount of feedback asking for this after launch, which I really can't see happening. Still it's not impossible, just improbable.

And I agree that more singleplayer gameplay is a lot more valuable than bloating it with a MP mode.

+1

It would be nice to have some stimulus from outside as I described above, but I certainly wouldn't want a online coop or competitive mode where everyone is playing in the same area to absorb development time. In my view these types of games are best played alone in binges during the snowy winter and rainy summer days.

I think there is no problem with a multiplayer game mode if it does not interference with the Single game mode (like SM5 that is horrible).
A good example of a city simulator with the 2 modes working fine is Open TDD, I hope that in the future Cities skylines have a multiplayer game mode similar to Open TDD, or in a same region there is space to build more than one city and you can trade things between cities (similar to SC5) or a CO-OP/ or Competition multiplayer game mode (similar to Open TDD) (where you can in the same region build your enterprise and compete with friends or people in have the best one)

I’m in the side that i will like in the future a Multiplayer game mode… i don’t see the harm of having the 2 games modes in the same game. The solo players can only play the single game mode and the ones that like playing with friends have the multiplayer option. BUT i also think that is better at this moment of the development of the game that they focus on the Single Player mode until it is perfect before they add the multiplayer mode (cause for making so many things at the same time can occur the disaster of SC5)
So let’s wait a little and make force that the devs make a multiplayer game mode in the future :)
And the ones that say that a city simulator does not work with multiplayer game modes (please don’t be a group of haters) one game mode doesn’t have to interference with the other. I invite you guys to play the multiplayer game mode of open TDD (is a free game)

in the steam forums and in reddit there are a lot of people asking for multiplayer game mode in the future so whe hope the "hope" is alive for this game mode.
