Because you're still releasing all the game content files. It's not so simple as "let's just remove this one file!"

It is actually in terms of being able to play the game or not - This is exactly the method, Steam has been using till now to avoid early piracy.

Yeah but you've still given crackers everything they need to crack your game. Usually when games are cracked, the only thing that gets changed is the .exe to get around security measures. So you're basically giving crackers all the files they need (game content) and taking away the one file they were going to replace anyway.

Actually PI could do the preload within a day or two of launch when there's not enough time for crackers to crack the game and leak it early anyway. I don't know how much launch traffic they're expecting.

If I'm not mistaken, I'm pretty sure that Steam has a special encryption for preload game. All the files are here, but cannot be open (like our .doc file for modding in paradox games) or use for gaming.

At time of release, Steam decrypt them with their server and the legit player is good to go in a few minutes.

To be simple, Steam provide the "heavy drm" that Johan is looking for. ;)

If you don't know the first thing about the subject, you should consider whether you should even open your mouth to begin with, or even speak with such authority.

While writing that paragraph, did a simple question occur to you at all? - How are the crackers going to get ahold of the executable file in the first place? They don't replace - they edit. It isn't just a simple command line telling Windows what files belongs together, it is a complex piece of software which in fact contains most of the game's code.

It's incredibly simple to break and was never intended to be foolproof (Yes it has been broken for years now.) - This is why files are also always missing from pre-loads to render the content unusable, until the time of release.

Well your first statement doesn't apply so I'll just ignore it here. In the end the game content files are the important part of the game not the .exe so it's not so simple as just releasing the game without the .exe.

Even if I'm not understanding completely, it doesn't matter. Steam servers have been very reliable and I don't think this will be an especially large game so a preload shouldn't really be necessary so I don't know why you're getting so belligerent about this issue. If you live in a rural area with slow internet then that's unfortunate and in that case I can sympathize.

The bunk of big files are models, textures, music and sound files.

Then you have a load of files which string all these together, script files, DLL files, gameplay code, the engine, all that sort of stuff.

For a game of, say, 2GB, there'll be at most 250mbs of the latter, with the rest the former. The beauty is that just those big files are mostly useless: Even if you do crack them, you'll need to write your own game from scratch.

That said, I would enjoy it if no-one would call anyone stupid. Live and learn, but don't call others names. Or I will send you to the aztec super empire and tell them the gods will be particularly pleased if they sacrifice you.

All the game "content" is like illustrations for the book. Exe file is the text in the book.
Releasing just images from the book doesn't really help to understand the story, even if it's a comic book.

What crackers do, it to take the exe, which contains all the things programmers made for the game (pardon this simplification), find the part that does DRM checking and remove it or go around it - that's why they give you the replacement file.
Without exe, they can't do anything. They can't crack the game, because there is no game to crack, everything is in that one, small file :)

*sigh*

No - No they're not. You're not going to be playing the game without the executables, no matter how how good of a programmer you are. You're not reverse engineering anything - you building it from scratch.

Its possible to do without DRM. Simply download all the large files that don't matter on thier own. So textures, models, sound, etc can be downloaded early. Day of the exe, launcher, etc open up for downloading.

The other method is to make the pre-loaded version extremely broken without a patch. Much harder to do with a game that has so much of its core dynamics in plain text AND of the complexity of EU... but imagine a FPS that has a default gravity 1/100th of normal, guns do 0 damage and the controls hardcoded backwards until the launchday patch. 0 DRM, unplayable till patched.

Still its all extra work. That said I thought steam had the ability to download a compressed and encrypted file to deliver locked content before release date. That way the developer doesn't have to do anything to assist. (also I think that file is incomplete as pre-loaded so its even harder to crack being effectively broken in addition to encrypted and compressed)

Maybe Steam has a policy that says that games have to be playable without downloading a patch? (I don't know I'm just speculating)

Also you'd have to make sure that people aren't able to use parts from the demo to replace the broken/missing files in the full download.

That would go against their entire pre-load model which does just that.

Well your first statement doesn't apply so I'll just ignore it here. In the end the game content files are the important part of the game not the .exe so it's not so simple as just releasing the game without the .exe.

Yes it is. And there is no such thing as cracking game files. You only crack the exe. Without that exe, you are not going to have a working game. It seems that you think that an exe is a generic file that is exactly the same for every single program, like identical engines that just get thrown into every car. It is not at all like that. Executables are derived from the program source code, which is completely unique. The exe could be reverse engineered to obtain source code making it a hell of a lot more important than just the game files, which could be remade or altered by moders. Without that exe, the game will never run, much like a car will never move without an engine.

C'mon guys. EU4 wouldn't be super large those crazy graphical 3d shooters. So it won't take you too long to download it. I prefer the dev to enhance the game rather than putting effort about preloading ;)

If its 2 GB or smaller it will take less than half an hour for me and yeah, i can watch a progress bar for half an hour and keep getting more and more exited as it grows and curse steam everytime the rate drops a bit :D

So its part of the fun!
But i understand that people with very slow internet are less exited about progress bar watching.

Right now I'm on 60MBit network. On 13th I'll only have very limited 3G connection :p I would much appreciate a preload right now, even if it's just part of the game.
