The only incident of defecting troops I can think of would be the last stages of the Chinese Civil War, when the hundreds of thousands of armed men switched sides. I can't think of any from the Second World War. Generals certainly defected, the most famous case being Vlassov, but his Russian army was conscripted from prisoners and the country itself, not from masses of defectors, AFAIK.

I'm wondering, were there any examples of large units who defected to the enemy during the 1936-1948 timeframe?
Maybe in some of the civil wars, but in other conflicts?

The only other civil war I can think of is the one in Spain. Does anyone know if defections took place there too?

While it would be cool with a dynamic system that allows troops to defect to other sides of the same culture/nationality if they are say surrounded, I doubt its feasable to justify the work needed to implement it.

Wasn't there and some french colonial troops who swithched sides between Vichy and the "Free French". And later in Algire, where they first oppose but later joined the Allies.

That's true, but it wasn't hostile defecting to friendly. It was essentially neutrals beoming friendlies. In the places where Vichy soldiers actually resisted, they didn't defect but instead surrendered (as at Casablanca or Oran). Those who joined the Allies, such as those in Tunisia, didn't fight the Allies but joined them without violence (and even before the Allies reached Tunisia).

We had this thread before and I think the consensus was that defections of division sized formations should only be possible in the case of Civil wars.

So Germany would not be able to force the defection of a surrounded russian unit. But the Republicans could do that to the nationalists.

Only civil wars really, even if German troops surrendered to the Allies or the Russians, they'd probably just be treated as POW's.

I can't think of any...
POW's would sometimes defect, but I haven't heard of any divisions that would switch sides and simply keep their name and OOB :)

The only time that this happened was in cases of Civil war. A great deal of the communist troops were simply nationalist divisions who had switched the white sun for a red star after a city had been surrounded.
