Will current saves be compatable with AoW?

All the new provinces will be terra incognito waiting for you to colonize, so it will likely crash your game or change your game experience...I need to finish my Japanese campaign soon!

Presumably, Wiz, anybody who is on an achievement run and doesn't manage to finish it before AoW can just opt in to the "beta" of 1.7.3 to finish the run and then opt out again to activate AoW / 1.8? The only downside I can see is the downloading via Steam may take a while depending on your bandwidth and any data limits from your ISP.

We've improved on this for AoW, new provinces get explored and assigned owners as appropriate, they also get tradegoods/bt etc. We still recommend finishing current games before AoW though, as again, no guarantees.

Is patch 1.8 *without* AoW loaded (seeing as you can select which DLC to include in the launcher) more likely to not mangle existing games? i.e. is it the DLC features (e.g. new map) that are more likely to mess with my current game, than just the new 1.8 patch features?

I really would like to finish my current England/Great Britain game (without AoW), but also want to be able to play new games with AoW loaded and patch 1.8.

The new map is not a DLC Feature but a free patch Feature. So it is going to mess around even if you disable AoW.

Old EU4 versions are found under the 'Betas' tab for EU4 in Steam. IIRC you can go back all the way to 1.3 if you so choose.

Right.
The only way to truly prevent updating is to make a backup copy of the game folder or don't run Steam client online.

Yes but if you try to load and play an Ironman save with an older version of the game you usually can´t do it; I had to scrap an LP (after 99 episodes) because after 1.7 was released I could not play a 1.5 ironman save with 1.5.1 or even 1.5.2. I think what most people want to know is if we can play our 1.7 ironman games with version 1.7 of the game after 1.8 is released?

If you are in an ongoing multi player game which has gone on for two months and you are 2/3 of the way through the game then yes, you might want to continue.

You don't have a choice, Steam will update automatically, unless you subscribe to a (very old, equally incompatible) beta version

If there was a "1.7.3. beta (release)" version I could subscribe to, that would work, but there isn't currently...

So if the 1.8 patch and DLC runs properly, does that means you would get Jihad achievement as soon as you load the game since there would be hundreds of new province spawn within your realm.
