Fundamental changes to the map says 'even if it is, older saves are going to look weird with provinces in odd places and a lot of unsettlable blank provinces.'

Bump.

I would like a developer answer on this please if possible. I'm assuming that the answer is no because of the vast changes to provinces.

I'm sure I am not the only player who has ongoing ironman campaigns and would like some warning as to whether I should finish up those achievement runs before time runs out.

not really.

Thanks. I guess I need to finish up my Najd Jihad run quick. I’m at 1780 and have 25 provinces to go :p.

I know it was implied in another thread that there would be new national group threads every day until release and that are a limited number of new national idea groups (20 or so??). So I am assuming I am quickly running out of days.

How much advance warning can we expect for the next patch? Will it go to beta testing for a while first?

Art of War comes on October 30th, so you have that long.

That said, Steam will allow you to revert the game to a previous patch via the "Betas" program, so if you can't get it done by the 30th you can use that to continue playing in the last patch until you're done. It shouldn't mess up Ironman or achievements.

Thanks, I guess I missed the post with the release date. I thought iron-man achievements didn't fire if you rolled back though.

I would like some confirmation of this as well. I would prefer to keep playing my Ironman on the current version, but I'm not going to bother if achievements become broken.

I never understand why you'd want to change the rules mid game. I'd rather start fresh with new features, as exciting as it is to try them out.

Actually it is possible to add provinces to the map mid game. It just results in those provinces having no history, or owner, or controller, or anything. But you can then add that stuff manually later on. It's tricky but it can be done. I once decided to split a province in three mid game and so made some adjustments. Adding the two new provinces wasn't impossible, although it was kinda tedious.

The tricky thing would probably actually be making changes to the Trade Map. Your map would probably use most of the old map for the provinces that already existed because if I remember correctly the save actually does record what Node each province is a part of in the province's history likely as a relic from when Paradox first made the system and hoped to make it dynamic and interesting. New provinces would be unassigned until you manually added their history entries. Routes would also be wonky and the Western Europe Node's deletion could probably cause a crash. Again though, I've added Routes mid game, so it should be possible, it will just require a lot of manual editing of the save.

If you are in an ongoing multi player game which has gone on for two months and you are 2/3 of the way through the game then yes, you might want to continue.

The save file is an ASCII text file so you can edit it it to fit the new game, or...

They should work but will likely have some issues. No guarantees basically.

you can open your save in AOW then either edit the save file and do a bit of console work (add_core ### then own ### to transfer provinces that have strange ownership)

It's a huge file and its what I'm planning to do in my MP game.

No, the game will automatically update to the latest version. The only question is if your saves will be broken by the update or not.

We've improved on this for AoW, new provinces get explored and assigned owners as appropriate, they also get tradegoods/bt etc. We still recommend finishing current games before AoW though, as again, no guarantees.

Presumably, Wiz, anybody who is on an achievement run and doesn't manage to finish it before AoW can just opt in to the "beta" of 1.7.3 to finish the run and then opt out again to activate AoW / 1.8? The only downside I can see is the downloading via Steam may take a while depending on your bandwidth and any data limits from your ISP.
