I invested in a company that are making a Counter App for Google Chrome, every time there is a counter thread the user is informed by a trumpet sound, I also put a bet down with Paddy Powers that there would be a thousand “How do you switch to the Counters” threads by the end of the year the odds were terrible just even money.
Anyhow you should be able to make the model disappear easy enough by scaling it down to a size that you cannot see or perhaps deleting it all together of course without the model you cannot tell in what direction a unit is moving only that it is performing an action, I presume Paradox added these action icons so people could tell more easily what their Divisions were doing which is always handy.
Of course the fact that a HOI IV type counter is generated for every different type of unit or action within a province means that a province could quickly fill up with these little rectangular shapes for example if you have a province with 2 Infantry, 1 PZ and 1 Mot Division you will have 3 Counters if one of those Infantry Divisions starts to move you will have 4 Counters.
I would suggest that the propensity towards confusion in HOI IV is extremely high especially if you have large armies and different unit types add back in the models and the fun should really start.
