Will there be counters in the game as well as sprites or just sprites?

If this has been stated before I'm sorry I haven't been following the Dev. of this game closely 'till the release date was announced.

Thank you

As I recall, NATO counters such as they where in Hoi III are not in the game. So you can not replace sprites with them.
However, you can replace all the fantasy unit icons with NATO symbols which will be standardized for all nations based on division composition.
So in MP if you don't want to deal with figuring out what the Rook icon means in the other guy's army, you can turn on NATO symbols and you'll see it's a Motorized Infantry division.

This has been discussed over and over.

The answer is YES and NO. The developers proposed a compromise that partially incorporate nato symbols on the map at a certain zoom level.

From DD#18:

...The icon defining a division on the map and in interfaces will be from the most important part of the division, but you can for your own preference change that icon to whatever you want, so you can easily see a difference between your variants.

Oh, and yes, there will be NATO symbols there for those that prefer those. And probably an option to use NATO symbols instead of great-looking-informative-paradox-style ones....

We have always planned to have a choice between nato symbols and our own icons...

There will be one counter for every thread on the issue, which is more than enough to cover all of the divisions that'll be needed :p.

On the OP, they didn't specify NATO symbols, in which case there are absolutely, definitely 'counters' in any meaningful sense in the game. However, they aren't the same as counters of HoI past, and at higher zoom levels (more zoomed in) the models will be there as well. There are no sprites (2D animated pictures), but there are 3D models for each stack as well. NATO symbols on the counters are optional, but the models are not (but I'd bet good money there'll be mods to remove the models not long after HoI4's launched).

How does the engine decide which icon to use with the NATO symbols? If I have a division with one tank, one mechanized, and one motorized, which icon will it pick?

It will change the one you already had on the template. So if you edited an infantry division which has the helmet icon you'll probably get the infantry counter.

Unfortunately counters (as most people now it) are not in the game. There are some new rectangular bars beneath the 3D model of a soldier/tank/unit that some people calls counters, however they are not. NATO symbols are in though. I just can't for the life of me figure out why some people would like to play with the new fantasy icons instead of normal NATO symbols, but each to their own.

However, I bet there will be a DLC down the road that adds normal counters. Hopefully with more choices too.

From what I understand, it will also be possible to turn of the 3D models - in my opinion, the absolute horror of the game from what I have seen so far. But then I hope you will be able to scale the "counter-bars" somewhat, as they are TINY on the map when zoomed in it seems.

So a counter is only a counter when it has no sprite next to it? Just like an automobile is only an automobile when there is no plane standing next to it?

Sorry, most of the information here appears to be wrong. In I believe the last, or second to last WWW Japan stream, they talked about this.

Counters, real, honest to goodness counters look like they have been added.

It appears that Paradox despite the hardline, caved in. Daniel turns them on, talks about how he has no idea what is happening or what anything is, they talk a little bit about the work that went into it, and then they turn them off.

Now, I am almost 100% sure these are not the hybrid counters that Paradox said they were putting in. These were REAL counters, with REAL nato symbols, and NO 3D model associated with them.

Ok, well, everyone refers to counters, even if they are "symbols". What I mean is, pretty much everyone calls the symbols that have been used in past HOI games as "counters". Even if it is incorrect technically, it's what people are expecting when they say counters.

The point being made is that Paradox said the following.

1) They would not add counters (symbols).
2) They softened and said "We will add counters (symbols) but they won't be NATO and they will still have the model".

On March 23rd WWW at ~40 minutes Daniel turns the NATO counters (symbols) on. Low and behold, they are the same counters (symbols) as HOI 2 and 3 (I didn't use counters if they existed in HOI1). Moreover Daniel zooms in close enough that I would say it is pretty much 100% confirmed that you can have counters(symbols) without the 3d models attached.

This does my head in.

Hoi3 style stacking counters with no unit model aren't in. NATO symbols for the new hoi4 counter are in and have been for a long time. With out modding the game you can't remove the models (to the best of our understanding).

These answers are the same answers that have come up in everyone of the last billion threads on the topic.

The only bit of info I'd like is if we can scale the point where models pop in and can we scale the size of the counters (would like them a little bigger).

@ timestamp 41:41, that might not be zoomed in enough to tell if there are models or not. It seems like it's borderline. I guess the models are maybe still there, but this section of the stream was a pleasant surprise.
