After last week's EU4 dev diary that announced that EU4 would be transitioning from 32 bit to 64 bit, I was wondering if CK2 might follow in EU4's footsteps, as a means to future-proof the game. This would be excellent timing to do so, since Holy Fury was maybe the best expansion CK2 has released (Way of Life or Monks & Mystics are other candidates for best expansion, imo), and no announcements regarding future expansions have been made.

We probably aren't going to hear anything on this for other games till EU4's 64 bit patch is done, once they have an idea how much developer time it cost to do they will probably assess the other games.

I'll brace myself for ridicule and ask this question anyway. What difference would transitioning to 64 bit make?
CPU performance, which is probably the biggest bottleneck with most paradox games, especialy with CK2
The main advantage is more than 3GB of Ram could be used and the games wont stop working on Mac when Mac drops 32bit support which is on the cards. CPU performance really wont be effected that much if at all.

Does Paradox even care about CK2 anymore? This game has a skeleton team of interns working on it in spare time it seems. Total radio silence, no dev daires.

More memory available. This *could* allow the developers to improve performance, as often performance improvements come at the cost of greater memory consumption.

Others have already given good answers to this.

In terms of your question, no ridicule is due at all. It is perfectly fair and I think the exactly the right question to ask. (I'm not implying skepticism about moving from 32 bit to 64 bit on my part, I just think it is worth discussing. It helps people understand and helps manage expectations about what should and shouldn't come from it.)

Depending on the code it can be anywhere from a lot of effort for the developers to an absolute nightmare, so it is a significant investment of time.

I wish more of my clients would ask questions like that sometimes, even if we just discuss things in general terms because they don't want to get into the deeper technical parts. (Even in this case where it's a very technical change where most of the direct benefits are going to be buried fairly far from the user. Those should still translate even if it is just in terms of smoothing future development.)

The difference between able to play the game or not when you have a Mac from September/October* onwards

*) next release of macOS will no longer support 32 bit applications
