We use Pershing as our top heavy for US as it was designated such by them. The T29 was too hard to fit into the tree. We use the M6 instead, the T29 was too late to fill the hole time wise. I imagine most US players will focus on medium tanks and cross over to Pershing late perhaps if needed for the punch.

The Sherman wasn't designed to go against enemy armor. That was the tank destroyers' job. The US had 6,700 M10's equipped with a 3 inch gun, 2,500 M18's equipped with a 76mm gun and 1,400 M36's equipped with a 90mm gun. Those tank destroyers were quite capable of killing German tanks. The Shermans were suppose to kill German infantry. The Sherman's machine gun did that just fine. I think that was what Patton was driving at.

That's not entirely true though. While doctrine did call for fast TDs to rush up and help deal with enemy armour, they were expected to ambush enemy tanks, not attack them openly. The Sherman was designed as a general purpose tank that could engage both tanks and infantry/fortifications. If we check the US' armored forces field manual from 1942:
http://www.ibiblio.org/hyperwar/USA/ref/FM/PDFs/FM17-33.PDF
(2) The medium tanks are used-
(a) As the leading wave or echelon of attack against known
enemy resistance when the antitank defense is strong.
(b) To support by fire the advance of light tanks, other
medium tanks, or infantry in tank versus tank action.

Since the Pershing is apparently the '43 US heavy i dont think theres consensus about it being a medium. Earlier its been said the Patton would be the '44 MBT. This fits very well with the fact that the Pershing being regarded as a Heavy then later when getting its upgrade and a better hp/t being redefined as a medium and renamed to the Patton.
If the above is the case in the game it would match the actual development pretty well. Though in my opinion the T29 would fit better in the '43 spot if you compare it to the TigerII and IS2?

Thats how it is and I agree, but it means not having the Pershing in the game in favor of a prototype tank (T29) which is pretty depressing considering how iconic it is. So I think this is the best possible compromise. Modders may do as they want of course
