Do all the countries have access to a full tech tree? Can France have armoured corps by 1940? Or are certain doctrines off limits to countries? If they aren't limited it seems like it would be much harder for the Germans to have many successes in the beginning if they aren't the pioneers in modern warfare.

Well the French DID have an armored corps in 1940 so there is no law against it...they just went with a more defensive doctrine. No reason you should have to do so as French...er....guiding spirit or whatever. The enormous German superiority in manpower and industrial strength should allow them to very easily beat Poland and France and the other countries they historically beat. You can just out research them :)!

Every country will "have access" to all the tech tree, but having access to it (nothing theorhetically preventing you from researching something) to actually being able to research what you want is a very big step. You're economy is going to be the big limit on what you can research.

Even major powers like the UK have to pick & choose very carefully what techs to research, & what to simply ignore.

Don't worry, Yuri will get'em! :D

Indeed, even with a good economy, you need to trade off - research (and in which fields?), production, supplies, consumer goods.... it depends on how you play.

Oops! Too late, by the start date he was already at Princeton. :)

Meanwhile, on that subject I've noticed several typos- there is no such thing as U-233 (fissionable at least) or Pu-235.

Umm, nuclear tech is a little messed up. It in no way affects the game, but it is wrong. If you look at my analysis link in the FAQ forum, you will see a diagram of a proposal for correcting nuclear tech. Alas, it was not feasible to make this correction.

Second time you've corrected me in one night. Perhaps it's a sign I should get some sleep rather than lose it over atomic masses.:)

Obviously in the grand scheme of things it isn't a big deal, but there is no way to fix it? I was under the impression techs were easily editable, I figured that editing descriptions would fall under that. no .txt file you can edit those things in? Unless you are talking about the weapons themselves, and even if you are, aren't those editable in the files as well? Just curious.

Oh, it is easily correctable. But, let's just say that there are a number of related components in the game, and other demands on the game production process. It was not feasible to correct them for the game release. So, for anyone knowledgable about nuclear technology, the game looks a little weird in this area. It does not affect game play at all, so that is good. Perhaps at some time in the future, Pardox will be able to correct this, then anyone knowledgable about nuclear technology will be happy with the real game mechanics being described correctly in terms of descriptive text in the game and such.

I see, thanks for clearing that up. It's good to keep the priorites in order.

The Industrial techs and the air engine techs might also need some polishing, but I guess you could say that about any feature in any game...

Hehe, my partner in correcting nuclear tech... :)

But, Priest, like EU, a lot of HoI can be modified by players. It is really quite easy with a little knowledge of how things are structured. So, in the example of nuclear technology. You, or I, or Petrarca are so bothered by it that one of us decides to make a mod to the game. It is very easy to do. The tricky part is to make sure to backup the mod, so that it can be reapplied after a Paradox patch.

As Aetius-san implies, there are a number of arguable aspects to the technology system. It is massive and comprehensive. But it is modeling a massive and complex thing. An individual can modify it as much as they want. Paradox, on the other hand, is interested in something that is sufficient to be released. This is no criticism of Paradox. It just takes so much work to do it exactly right...

From what I have read, the French really did have a perfectly respectable arsenal of tanks when WWII broke out. At the time a lot of people thought they had the best armored forces in the world. Germany had been very limited in what sorts of weapons they could build under the Treaty of Versailles. They could build tanks, but they had to be relatively small and lightly armed. Even after Hitler took over they stayed within these limits for awhile, and by the time the war started they still hadn't produced all that many heavily armed and armored tanks.

Fortuantely for the Germans, their military thinkers had given a lot of consideration to how to build an effective military while staying within those treaty limitations. They couldn't build big tanks, but they could build fast ones. So they worked out a doctrine that played to this strength.

LOL! Yes, HoI is a U.S. propaganda tool to mislead dictators around the world to researching the wrong stuff in order to get to their Nukes.... :D
