Wildfire (and a punch-in-the-gut event)

Let me get this straight.... I have a colony that only produces 1,000 research per Sol when the Wildfire event begins. I have less than 100 colonists. I scramble to face the threat and get hit by this 20% through the research?

Who cares if the other sponsors steal this research? Ooh! Here's an idea! How about they help the research along??

They are not just stealing research - they also steal passwords, and it allows them to install viruses on your servers. So, the speed reduction might be due to them taking the research results for themselves, and deleting your copy. Probably means they are real bad guys, and you should send a rocket with some officers to get the research back...
