It's Maurice Gamelin, best known for losing the battle of France and appearing in most "top 10 worst generals ever" lists out there. He apparently was an unusually competent officer in WW1 though, and he was strictly apolitical. I find him a very interesting personality, also I like the super-smug look on his face.

For a second choice I would've picked Friedrich Paulus, another very interesting commander with a terrible reputation. Gamelin stands out a bit more though.

I'll probably change it into a Hungarian general once DoD comes out, not sure which one yet though.

You're correct. He did say "I shall return." They both mean the same thing. Arnold's may have sounded cooler but MacArthur's definitely carried more weight.

No Idea who she is

That is Captain Lakshmi Sahgal, the leader of the all female Rani of Jhansi Regiment of the Indian National Army. However, the more remarkable thing to me is her commitment to being a doctor not a soldier. She helped to organize relief efforts for refugees of the Bangladesh liberation war and even in her 90s she still saw patients at her clinic in Kanpur. She died not that long ago in 2012 actually

Though my ancestry is English and Scots, with a suggestion of some Scandinavian heritage, but I feel a great affinity with Greece.

There are no Greek portraits, so I use the old flag from earlier version, it would be nice to have a picture of an Andarte as an option, or the Greece Fights On morale / propaganda poster.

Picked mine because it kind of looks like me in some ways IRL. Well, before I shaved off my victorian-style moustache at least, something I am kind of regretting now. But it's a lot of work having that kind of moustache and wax costs money.
Also, I liked the fact that it seemed a bit generic and didn't represent a known personality.

I know some of the Vicky portraits represent actual generals. Anyone know if the portrait I am using is an actual historical general? If so, I wouldn't mind learning who it is.

Edit: Also, all those shaved baby faces of WW2 generals suck. I hate having a general without a moustache or at the very least a beard.

Good ole hoi3 british/union jack/uk flag representing all the great nations of the British isles that reminds me that although we vastly bicker and compete among each other, sometimes showing contempt either in good humour or not towards each other, or disowning britishness to identify more with ones own country within the isles, that together we have achieved some great feats throughout history, the qualities that each country brings is what gives character to the flag. A sad day it will be for me if the union disintegrated.

Also it's quite fitting to have a British flag if my moniker is AgentGB

I'm a big fan of George, ever since childhood. My dad was in the 3rd Army, told many stories, and of course took the kids to see the movie.
Also, his career and record in both WWI and WWII is a really good read. A many sided man full of surprises.

I've always been interested in the Pacific war. Probably comes from having lived there for a bit growing up, and had an opportunity to visit several of the islands where battles occurred. I currently reside not too far from where Nimitz grew up, where the Nimitz Museum and the National Museum of the Pacific War are.

Well, I am from former USSR (Azerbaijan), but moved to Canada when I was 17.
I was looking for someone who looked like me, and General Shizuichi Tanaka at least got the nose, moustache and the uniform (I have a Soviet gimnastyorka without insignia that I inherited from my family that I like to wear on a daily basis that eerily looks like his tunic, same colour too). Plus, not many people use his picture - which adds to diversity, and from what I know, he wasn't a horrible human being. Azerbaijan's generals have generic portraits (I really hope they update Azerbaijan at some point though, at the very least it is a playable nation, but the flag, the ministers, the generals and even certain country leaders are a joke), Turks are generic too, my Soviets in HoI4 don't really have a commander that looks like me and in the same time was not a complete horrible human being
My second choice would have been Richard O'Connor, and third would've been Wilhelm Marschall (he just has a very strong U-Boot commander vibe, and as a historian, I am very interested in U-Boot history).

Moustache, enough said.

My father actually met old Budyonny in early 1970s, when the latter was retired and in sanatorium, I think in Kislovodsk. Budyonny died in 1973, so it was a close call to meet someone of historic significance (although he did act as a buffoon sometimes, he was a lot more cunning than many thought he was).

You either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain.

When Hoi4 was released someone made a list with all the possible country names. Many were humorous but I liked the fascist Costa Rica in particular. Played Costa Potente few times and then changed to this avatar. It's amusing start because it's so difficult but there are similiarly weak neighbours to bully.

Kinda new here, but anyways.....

It's mainly because I personally enjoy playing as the German Reich in SP. Other than that, my next choice as a profile pic would've been Rommel because I've always thought of him as one of the absolute best generals in the war.

I'm primarily a naval and air power guy, I have the most academic interest in Imperial Japan, and Inoue Shigeyoshi was 1. a naval officer, 2. a radical air power advocate, 3. vehemently opposed to the Tripartite Pact and Japanese overseas expansion, 4. an all around good and interesting guy. He was never a great operational commander, but was an able administrator, hence why he isn't particularly well known. Inoue launched a massive attack on the IJN's shipbuilding plans and strategic posture that indicated a future war with the United States after being appointed as chief of the Naval Aviation Bureau in 1940. As a result, he was none-to-subtly pushed out of the position and transferred to pretty much the furthest command from Japan that was befitting of a Vice Admiral: Fourth Fleet based out of Truk.

Kaigun: Strategy, Tactics, and Technology in the Imperial Japanese Navy, 1887-1941 by David C. Evans and Mark R. Peattie is actually dedicated to: "Admiral Inoue Shigeyoshi (1889-1975), professional, patriot, and realist."

General James 'Jimmy Doolittle and his Raiders are personal heroes to me and have been since i began studying the War as a young boy. Doolittle past away when i was 13. He is the embodiment of a True American as was his Raiders in so many ways. I did get to meet 16 of the Raiders at Reunion on 18 April 2006 and it was a very special day for me to salute with them. I teach my students about General Doolittle every year and on the 18 April, we stop class to toast the Raiders. I was so happy to see him included as a minister in HOI4 despite the lack of AF commanders
