I as the Earl Muiredach of Desmond proposed marriage to Princess Adelheid of the Holy Roman Empire. I think at that time the King of the HRE had a -3 opinion of me. Why would this marriage proposal be accepted? My guy is a nobody compared to a Princess of the HRE.

Thanks

The Kaiser probably just wants to marry her off. Remember the HRE is elective so her title is just that: a title.
Plus, if we're talking about who I think we're talking about (Kaiser Heinrich's heir in 1066), she's his sister, not his daughter, so he likely anticipates a proper heir.

I actually remember marrying her to an Irishman in the demo...

Lucky girl.

This may be a bit of a stupid question, but wouldn't, or shouldn't there be some sort of prestige associated with marrying someone like that? Would that come across in the game?

There is, different title ranks get a bonuses or maluses to prestige based on the rank of whom they marry.

Adelheid is an heiress. And I've had this happen as well with Irish counts. Another one- King Philip of France refuses marriage with Princess Emma for all of the Dukes and Kings that I play, but will accept with 100% certainty for an Irish count. Seems a little screwy.

Hmm.. One thing that pops to mind. Adelheid is the 1st heir to Franconia, a Duchy of the emperor. If the Emperor has a kid she becomes a claimant I believe. An Irish Earl isn't likely to be able to press that claim against an Emperors son, a duke in France or Germany might be able to.
Sending someone to an Irish court is the female version of sending a son to the Church.

Not sure if the AI is doing that, but I might start.

She's only a claimant if she's one of the two pretenders when the Kaiser dies. If he just gets more heirs she just loses her heiress status (though I think she gets to continue being a princess, at least until her brother dies).

If he has 3 children alive when he dies, she isn't a claimant, but that's 3 kids down the road, he might die after 1. Better just to send her to the backwater of Ireland, never to be heard from again. ;)

Thanks for the replies. I got a prestige bonus so that was good. I wish the game was a little more transparent so it doesn't seem so random. Probably doesn't help that I don't really understand how all the claimant stuff works too. :)

AI decisions are actually a tad more transparent than in previous games, mouse over the thing that says "yes" or "no" above "Send" on the diplomacy screen and it will show the factors the AI takes into account. Each has a value in +s or -s; generally, if the number of minuses is >= the number of pluses, they say no, though I think I've seen the AI agree to something when they're equal to each other.

I always start my game trying to marry her or get one of my heirs to if I have the opportunity. She gives a nice prestige boost and an alliance with the HRE which is always useful. Of course whether the HRE will actually help out later is a different question.
