I'm not bashing anyone.

There's a fix in the tech-support forum for God's sake!

Or...

Pull the damn game out of the Steam folder, put it in your Program Files folder, run the actual HOI3 launcher, not the Steam one, and play the game like everyone else (including patching through PI's launcher). :)

Well then people should start buying HOI3 from places other than Steam to avoid problems, as I said before.

No other distributor has any issues at all.

Then again no other distributor requires that the game be patched from their own service, that the game default to launching from their service, that the game reside in a folder other than the default path of all other distributors, etc.

It's amazing that 1.1 and 1.2 didn't have as many problems as 1.3 has given those circumstances.

PI should have just given Steam the same game and patch that it gave everyone else and make them deal with it.

I don't think you understand how the business model works. If HOI3 isn't sold by Steam, Steam doesn't lose out on being the dominant distributor of digital games. On the other hand, HOI3 loses out on all of Steam's customers, and fewer people will likely ever buy HOI3. That means less revenue for PI.

HOI3 decided to use Steam to sell their product, so they need to make it so it will work with Steam. They knew Steam would be marketing it and selling it, so PI needs to prepare their product so it can be.

The problem is that Steam customers are everyone else. There are probably just as many, if not more people, who've purchased the game via Steam than from off some store shelf.

My point is, there is a solution to the problem here.

Did Steam bother to come up with a solution of their own to please their customers?

It's their system that makes it difficult. They should be catering to their loyal customer base that makes them the creme de la creme of online distributors or Gamersgate and Direct 2 Drive are going to end up taking over that spot soon. :)

Paradox has 10 days to fix this issue or I will declare internet warfare upon them. That does not involve hacking, anything malicious, or anything illegal. I do not think I'm a bad-ass threatening the apocalypse upon Paradox.

It's not Steam's responsibility to make PI's product fit their system, because PI decided to use Steam. PI didn't have to go with Steam, but they chose to and they have to make their game work with Steam. Steam is not the problem, it's PI shirking their responsibilities.

The amount of unsubstantiated steam bashings in this thread is quite eye opening. All steam does is let you buy the game and download it. In Hoi3's case it doesn't even have DRM on it (i can run it at work where my steam can't connect because of a proxy server).
The steam install even has the paradox launcher and DOES work with normal patches. The problem is that for some reason steam is distributing a patch that creates the wrong checksum. Didn't happen with 1.1, didn't happen with 1.2. Why is it happening for 1.3? The most likely situation is that for whatever reason steam was given the wrong patch by PI and for some reason its taken this long to get it fixed.
For most people the problem wasn't the issue itself (thanks to a very clever fix by a community member). It was the fact that PI just seemed to completely ignore it. I'm happy that Johan has acknowledged it in this thread, but it doesn't change the fact that they should of said SOMETHING the day it was discovered.

Why is Steam not putting any DRM on the game a big deal when the developer NEVER puts ANY DRM on their games? Should Steam get a cookie for not adding DRM to a program, if so then kudos to Steam.

EDIT: This is not to Spectral specifically, more than he has mentioned this.

Only reason i mentioned DRM is because steam is well known for DRMing there games. Not a bad thing either IMO.

I did go a little Steam-bash happy.

But only because if the Steam version was the same as the Gamersgate version there wouldn't be any problems, because I have no problems at all with the Gamersgate version.

I don't even use Steam for HOI3 and it bothers me that people have problems with it.

My guess is something in the HOI3 patch for the Steam-version doesn't match the "normal" patch and that's why the checksum is different.

Overwriting the Steam Patch with the regular HOI3 patch would probably fix that issue, but then it might try to update you back to the Steam version again.

It doesn't, it works fine strangely enough.
Between Steam and PI they are really dragging there feet to fix this. There both well respected professional companies that do there jobs well (most of the time). This is where all the angst is coming from.

This has been a very common topic since PI started using Steam to distribute their games. In the beginning there were a bunch of problems on Steam's end with getting games patched properly. Why there is still a problem at this point in time is curious.

It was the fact that PI just seemed to completely ignore it. I'm happy that Johan has acknowledged it in this thread, but it doesn't change the fact that they should of said SOMETHING the day it was discovered.

Sure it would have been nice, but would anyone really think Paradox was ignoring an issue that affects so many of their customers? Angering the people who buy your product is a bad business practice and I'm sure just about everyone with a job understands that, PI included. So it follows that they were working on the Steam issue along with the many other problems HoI3 suffers from to improve their product and please their customers.

So yes, it would have been reassuring to hear it directly and early but is it really worthy of the irrational rants some people make about it, "Paradox steelz r munyz!" for example?
