I'm interested to see the responses here, I never played EUII before, in fact, I never heard of Paradox Interactive until about 6 months ago, when I found EUIII.
But anyway...EUII is said to be much more historical than EUIII, and has many nation-specific events. (I do not doubt this though.) Like the title said....why would I buy EUII when I have EUIII? (besides the cheap cost)

The real question is: "Why would I want to buy EU3 when I have EU2?" :)

It's all up to the individual I suppose, but I find EU2 to be far more enjoyable than it's successor.

If that's not enough, think of the Falalalan factor!

And last but not least: AGCEEP :)

Thanks!

I found it. Looks interesting... A better AI is welcomed (even with boost events).

I will try it out.

Is there a readme somewhere?

I checked in the .rar download and the topic too, but couldn't find any.

Is running the .exe and copying the contents of the rar (an EP directory) enough?

I take it that is a mod, perhaps EUII's equivalent to Magnu Mundi?
EU2 has many mods: AGCEEP, Interregnum, EP, MyMap, ExtraWATK, etc...

Be aware many of them are based on different versions of AGCEEP (with differents maps and/or different goals). ;)

Be aware Magna Mundi includes some parts of AGCEEP too. :D

So, the ai in EUII is moddable? That could be just enough to spend 5$....

Also note that unlike in eu3, EU2's countries can all have different AI files, and you can change them on the fly through events at anytime during the game. Kind of like in HOI2 where one country has several AI files depending on where they are in the course of the game.

I personally find EUII to be much more fun. I have not really been able to get into playing EUIII, I really like the events in EUII

The quick reasons to buy EU II.

1) It's not resorce-hungry on your computer, even in comparison to other games of the same year.

2) Every nation is playable (only natives, rebels & pirates are not)

3) You can run it off of your hard drive

4) Easy to tinker with (ie mods, hacks, etc)

5) You learn history

6) Pick-up, Put down game (ie you can play as little or as much as you like each session)

7) Very forgiving when using Alt-Tab and running other programmes in background (I often play it while waiting for heavy downloads to finish)

8) Fair amount of downloads availible

9) Works well as a series (EUII -> Victoria -> HoI II)

10) Replay factor - every game is different, even if your tactics are not.

11) Easy to cheat and 'fire' events

12) It's cheap. (now)

13) It's quite stable in XP (although not as stable as I would like)

Many games have gone for the eye candy now, like EU III and Civilization IV. Although Paradox has done it better than Fraxis did, EU III just doen't hold me the same as it's predessor did.

Correction: only natives are not playable. :D

EU2 has this 'feel' to it that EU3, based on my limited (to demo and other peoples' opinion) knowledge, doesn't. When you play, say, Burgundy, and than have a game as, say, Poland, it's a totally different experience: you get strong leaders/monarchs at set dates (in EU3 you recruit leaders whenever you want, which is good, but...), so e.g. your expansion will be much greater in those periods. The same goes with events, especially while playing AGCEEP - they 'make' you follow a certain historical path, but still leave you a choice that can result in totally ahistorical mess - EU3 always results in an ahistorical mess :p.

So yes, buy EU2. It's worth four times as much as the price is now.
