I still remember 20 years ago when I was a teenager I just had to buy the Mechcommander game that was released. It costed over 2100 Czech crowns back then which was outrageous price for a game! It is an equivalent of 105$ today. I spend my whole savings which I was collecting for more than a year just to have the game. I still have the original manual stored somewhere. :)

I have no comment on the game price.

I will say that an average wage is not a very useful number (if it's based on the mean). Generally the median wage provides a much better idea of what people actually make.

Personally i would prefer the modal average as well - maybe find the mid point between the two?. But for the purposes of comparison we both agree the median or mode average wage is likely to be lower, and unless the amount they differ, between countries, is drastically different it doesn't impact too much for the purposes of calculations. (And as i have already said, the fact the mean average wage is quite high means the situation is even worse than some people are trying to claim)

The buying power from country to country can be quite dramatically different though. ElvenNeko had to cough up about 1/3 of his monthly earnings, and 1/3 of his monthly earnings equates to about a McDonalds meal with a couple of cheeseburgers on the side for me. The price I paid for the game, is that x2, so not that big of a deal for me, but a lot for him. It isn't so much where you are on the scale related to others if within the same country, it is what those money could get you.

Modal average and median I have no clue about what means, so I might be talking about something, that you already is on to :D

Cheers :)

Median is when you line up all the figures from smallest to largest (or vice versa) and then take the one in the middle.
Mode is the most frequently occurring number
1 2 2 2 3 3 4 5 6
Median is 3
Mode is 2
I agree with the relative purchasing power, but it can be a hard concept to explain in the limited form of a post. Especially when you are unsure of the level of basic education of the person you are talking with -so if it ever seems like like I am being patronising or condescending then my apologies in advance, I don't mean to be but I'm just making sure we have the same knowledge foundation on which to build our discussion :)

Simple example that will help explain why looking at the median is better

We have five people with the following salaries:

- $10,000/year
- $20,000/year
- $30,000/year
- $40,000/year
- $500,000/year

The average (mean) of these salaries is $120,000

The median of these salaries is $30,000

Which one of those numbers more accurately represents what typical person in that group makes?

No worries, I have not percieved it like that by any means. I've been long enough on the internet to know, that written words doesn't always carry the mood it is written in, particular well. Which is also why I usually (when I remember it) use smiley's and the like, to let the reader understand what mood and tone it should be percieved in.

And thanks for the info. And I understand what you mean now.

Cheers :)

True, but I think we also need to keep the mode value in mind as well.
At the end of the day, no average is going to be perfect.

You'll have to excuse me, for not doing your math example. Math is probably the worst you can present for me, as I suffer from Dyscalculia.

Cheers :)

I don't disagree on the value of the mode......although for income I'd probably tend to lean towards median

Both are better than the mean; income is a sample set with large outlier values
