I'd use it. It would drastically cut down on the time I spend trying to decide on a country to play.

Sounds rather pointless. Waggle mouse, click is far better or use the random.org list thing.

After all, this game might give you France or Modena at either end of the scale, or Inca or Ming. Doesn't really sound very useful.

IMHO if it's possible to choose random country, I'll select Asia option, then I won't get France. ;)

I'm not sure why people are so opposed to the notion of adding a RNG to the country selection screen. If you don't want it don't use it.

Personally I think it would be a good idea, just as long as I get to preview the choice before I start the game. Clicking the randomize button a few times until I found a playable nation might be a fun way to try regions or nations I never tried before. In Civ IV I use the random button exclusively.

random.org would do the job, but that sounds like a lot of work.

Not "opposed" to the idea, merely pointing out that the ability to randomly select a country already exists.

Another reason wiggling the mouse isn't random, you actually can tell generally where the cursor is without opening your eyes. I know I can anyway.

If you start to scroll the map it would be random but:

1. That's a pain.

2. You would have no idea where you were on the globe, so the idea of selecting a region is out.

I'd really prefer PI worked on more important issues, so unless someone mods it, draw names out of a hat. The return of value vs. time invested is bad.

Yeah, it's a head scratcher this one. No telling how long it would take them to cobble together a RNG and a box in the interface. Months could be lost and the companies finest minds could be required. Possibly even a consultant or two.

And the channel islands doomstack problem (fixable through a simple edit) still exists in Hoi3, they don't have infinite resources, staff or time, and to go down the road of devoting them to a niche issue that the playing community isn't really frothing for is bad business and bad design. What does it really give to gameplay that the player can't handle themselves with a mod, a pad of paper and dice or any other randomizer? People want to believe that everyone must want the same thing they do, but it doesn't make it so.

The Channel Islands doomstack problem is not fixable through a simple edit. They could make it so there is no land connection I suppose, but that doesn't fix the broader problem of doom stacks in general, which are common throughout the game and not just in the channel islands. Ultimately they need to rewrite the AI.

You make it sound like this is an unreasonable request that comes out of left field. Other strategy games have this feature. It probably should have been included out of the box. It is a very simple thing to add and could easily be put in a patch.

Nobody is demanding the feature. We just said it would be nice.

And dice? A pad of paper? Is that a joke? There's how many factions? No one is going to spend 2 hours rolling dice before the game.

As I asked previously anyone know is it possible to mod EU3 to choose random nations? Still no answer. It seems making mod that chooses random nation is impossible.

Modders don't have access to that sort of functionality, not without editing the .exe file (and even then...). You can add buttons to the interface... maybe... but they wouldn't have any functionality.

It... might be possible to write an external application that would scan the history files, construct a list of extant nations for a particular year and then select one randomly... but in all honesty I see no utility in something like this, and writing such a program wouldn't be particularly interesting.

EDIT:

Want a truly random selection? Get yourself 3 26-sided die (or the computational equivalent). Assign those numbers to letters, look up who's tag that is, and play said nation.

There are only about 300 tags in the game. That method would produce illegal tags 98% of the time.

Thanks for your information. I think writing external software could be solution, if PI doesn't have time to make selection of random country. ;)

IMO if there is utility, utility should have ability to create save game of 14 October, 1399 according random choice of user.
