I like gigantic cities/economic regions quite a bit. If Paradox came up to me and said "hey FerdinandVeblen, make us a city builder", after I learned to program or hired some programmers, my vision for the game would be much more "big-picture giant spreadsheet" than what CO is doing: no individual citizens, less fancy graphics (even though I love the "model train" look that Cities:Skylines is going for), a game that runs on stocks and flows mostly and not on individual pathfinding...

But I'm not Colossal Order, and they get to make their vision of a city-builder. If you don't like it, feel free not to buy it (I'm still going to buy C:S, even though it's not ideal for me it looks pretty cool), but complaining on the forums that the vision is different from what you want, at such a late point in development, is kind of like going to Call of Duty forums and complaining the game doesn't have enough grand strategy elements. I agree with the criticism, but there isn't really a point.

The devs gave you nine, and you ask for 25, then they give you unofficial support for 25, and you ask for even more, and a chance to remove the agent system to go further. It's no longer about the negativity towards massive cities, now it just boils down to a bunch of players who aren't happy with the opportunities that have been given to them.

THANKS for saying what a lot of people just don't understand.

They aren't aiming to please everyone however some people just can't be pleased!!

Every other thread i see on this forum is something about city sizes... Why can't people just let the dust settle until the game comes out.

It's not out yet! Nobody's played it! Everyone just thinks this or that is wrong, it should have this or that, or they won't like this or that. But they don't know. They've never experienced how all the parts interact with each other. Everything was done the way it was for a reason. Just because you haven't tested it doesn't mean it doesn't it hasn't been tested, tweaked, and fixed.

There's a similar thread on the subreddit and I said that once you give people an inch, they'll want a foot. Some people will just never be fully satisfied. They just want more and more and more with disregard to the well-being of a game and its structural integrity

I mean for the love of god, 9 tiles is a ridiculously large amount of space for a city builder.

The 36Km build area is way more than I could have hoped for. SC4 was great but you had to save and load maps and this was a pain. CXL had big maps but the game was stale, lifeless and completely boring. SC2013 was fun at first but the tiny maps and messed up engine completely ruined it.

CSL however will give us a big enough playable area to build realistic and functioning cities with all the benefits of the previous city builders. We have the ability to MOD should we desire and CO could possibly increase the size in the future but at the end of the day a compromise must be made as there are always limits.

I have huge respect for CO and Paradox for engaging with the community and bending over backwards to try to deliver our hopes and dreams. I feel there are some very spoilt and entitled gamers out there that need a reality check as well as needing to show a little respect.

I think what the OP is asking for is for the game to have an option to turn off the lives of the cims and use the extra computer power for larger maps and populations, and just give the player a visual representation of the people and the cars like SimCity4 does. Obviously, this is at the core of the games design and cannot be done. In saying that, it does bring the question, is it better to have a real simulation of every individual sim, over a visual rep that can support day/night cycle, 25 tiles and 50 million population?

I'm glad there are limits. SC4 is probably my favorite game ever but I won't miss going online to see what hideous 200 million population characterless dull monstrosity some 15 year old is trying to show off!

I think DK115 was having some fun with the good Dr James (the OP)... making fun of how unreasonable his logic was to start with.

CSL will be a game. With limitations. Because the average gamer does not want to over micro manage, because the ag has a average computer, because the ag does not play 24/7 but has average time, because etc .... And let's face it, it will be - hopefully for CO - the ag who buys this game a lot. So CO puts the time where the money is.

The OP does not look like an ag to me. It looks like he is looking for a game what simulates life. You know life? For people who does not know "life": That's the stuff that is happing outside while you playing games. So if he is looking for that game, maybe taste the real stuff? And if not, stop with (the tone of) this posts to CO, first play the game, and then look for some modders to see how they can help you with your dream game and find out that there will always be limitations. Even in real life ...

Nice one, Chuckybear.

The good news is that the OP seems to be very much in a minority here. It looks like everyone pounced and he decided to get out of Dodge. MOST people here accept the approach that CO is taking, and we'll get the game, say 'thank you very much', and then see what we can or cannot tweak.

I think there is a delicate balance that has to be struck. As much as I'd love to build a city of 10+ million I also want to feel like my city is alive. It's neat to think that every agent has a real purpose, heading to and from places, rather than just a generic animation of nothingness. That will give amazing feedback to the player. It's weird defending this approach as its what led to the failure of SC5 more than anything, but they failed major in striking a balance. The one city tile approach was just ridiculously small. CO has given us 9x the city to work with, that's a HUGE gain obviously and I think an appropriate balance they struck.

I'd buy both games for sure. I really like the agent approach and the idea of the little cims being simulated and persistent, but I'd like a 'spreadsheet' type game with fancy graphics too.

If I could only have one game, then I'd pick the agent game.

I feel like the agent system has alot of potential. It's so different than how previous city builders were like.

It's just that the agent system hasn't matured enough. Perhaps more on that technology isn't at the point where we can go crazy with it but i'm sure that once we reach that point then the statistical system of city building will become simply a memory.

this.
I'm all for bigger cities but the way the game is written and the technology we use put limits on that. Sadly.
However, depending on how long the lifecycle of Cities turns out to be it might be interesting to push the limits as technology improves, until such point a sequel becomes the better course of action.

+1. We will eventually get better. As technology gets more powerful, and as developers find shortcuts to this to make it run better, but still be the same.

What matters is that the map sizes are a big improvement over SimCity 2013, and simulation (appears) to be a big improvement over CitiesXL. The conclusion? We are getting a better game that will be open to modders to expand even further. Unfortunately, theres no pleasing some people..
