I think the England-Ireland strait is there as a bit of an edge case for the AI logic: AIs generally won't be interested in conquering non-connected provinces of wrong culture without a mission. Pre-1.8, England/GB would therefore usually conquer Ireland and subsequently release it in some war they lost, then never touch it again. Since this is the only case in the game where this occurs as a rule and is a jarring problem, adding the strait was probably judged a better (if not perfect, and arguably not good) solution until resources get freed up to deal with the problem more generally.

From a simulationist point of view, some of them are a bit ridiculous perhaps, but for gameplay reasons I would prefer *more* straits wherever they make even remotely any sense. They can be blockaded, so they don't make the strategical gameplay any less compelling, but they do reduce micromanagement and potentially make things easier for the AI to handle.

However, they should significantly increase the travel time across the "longer" straits and probably make it scale by the size of the army, since a small force you can ferry across easily, but a larger one takes time and effort.

Remove straits? Hell, I wish they'd just remove transports! Let armies cross oceans by choosing a destination and having it take time based on various circumstances, and be at a massive penalty if defenders are present of course. Sorta like what rebels do.

Dragging armies around with boats is basically the worst tedium there is. At least with sieges and province attrition it not only takes less time to sort out, but I can just ignore it and suck up some manpower if I want; with boats it's all the work all the time. I actually stopped playing island-heavy games until 1.8 allowed me to not deal with remote island rebels. It's the WORST!
