In my opinion, Victoria is perhaps the only PI game I've ever played which I believe will be even more awesome if it's set in the modern world. Why? Because in the 21st century we're faced with even greater uncertainties and interesting issues, such as the financial crisis, pollution/clean energy, rises of other potential superpowers, danger of WWIII(nuclear bombs), people who are more educated and thus more politically aware(higher CON :p), and all other exciting stuffs which could be roughly modeled in Victoria's complex socioeconomic-political system.

Not to even mention how cool it would be if the United Nations, G6/G8, APEC, WTO are actually modeled in the game. That would be pure awesomness. ;)

I do agree with you, Vic is the best Paradox game for MDS. Shame that this one for Vic1 has never been finished. I hope I'll play Vic2: Modern Day Scenario some day.

I'll be happy to get the League of Nations and the Zollverein...

Somebody asked devs if we could have League of Nations based on EU3: Holy Roman Empire structure.
I don't exactly remember whaat the answer was.
Great idea IMHO

Well Vicky is mainly about changes and development. It is also part of fun to compare your game with history. Modern days as in cold war till now - maybe. I personally think that big part of Vicky potential would be lost, but it is still best PI game for this part.
Modern days as in now - no. You would have to deal with some issues that are slightely controversial. Global warming: yes/no and how to model it to the future? Financial crisis: regulations or deregulations? What is the best way to deal with it? Strategic reserves of various kind: how much oil/uranium/metals is where and what technologies will make them useless or expand our possibility to get them? What about ideologies and changes in them? Let's face it. Modern world is not that much separated into various ideologies and the mainstream politics is very much compact.
All-in-all it would probably make a good game, but it wouldn't be fun for a lot of people (why bother with global warming, when you don't believe it can be influenced) and the projection towards future is a bit problematic and (at least for me) far less fun than changing past.

IFRC it was "No"

I agree Vicky is the more suited Paradox game for a Cold War mod. It makes the game funny with limited military conflicts... it depends on how diplomacy, esphere of influence and spionage are simulated actually in Vicky2. Economy and Politics, the core of Vicky, could work in this timeframe: industrialization was the point maybe till the late seventies, and politics could be easily handled (maybe not easily, but it seems feasible).

I agree telesien: modern day economy and issues won't fit in Vicky.

Ash that crack pipe son. The 19th century was much more interesting that the 2nd half of the 20th century.

Revolutions both scientifically, culturally and politically. You cannot top it!

(GFC is not a major event in world history, sorry)

I definitely love the Vicky time period, but I've always wished for a Vickyish game covering something like 1953-2000. You could also push it into the future, but that runs the risk of having the future part ruined once the Manchurian Crisis of 2017 or the rise of the Machine Empire or whatever unexpected things actually happen and fail to be represented in the game.

Look like I'll have to wait till 2070AD for Paradox to release:

Last Era: Rise & Fall of Modern Civilizations

which is of course after WWIII's been fought and we'll be playing the game with dices and a paper map.

The only way they'll give us a modern war game is when "modern" becomes "the past" in 70 years or so, since Paradox games has always been about history.

Still I've never given up on finding a grand strategy in a modern world setting. The closest things are Supreme Ruler 2020 and Superpower 2, but both games have so many issues that make them unplayable.

Yeah, I'd absolutely love a decent MDS. Geopolitical Simulator had the right idea, but the execution was appalling.

No. Just no. I hate games that simulate the modern age, about as much fun as shooting fish in a barrel.

What's the problem with shooting fish in a barrel?

If done right it would be insanely fun. You'd have the power spheres for military/economic/social (Cultural) and it would be super trying to make mid-level nation into a real power. Imo.

I think a Paradox Cold War game would be great. Most of the elements required have been done before in HOI 3, EUIII and appear to be getting developed for VIC2.

Nuclear war may need a bit of tweaking and some way of issuing ultimatums to other countries would be useful to show international tensions. A playable way of portraying guerrilla wars and insurgencies such as Vietnam and Malaysia would probably have to be developed.

I don't believe paradox is interested in doing this kind of project though. I think the most likely way for this to happen would be if a group such as the Magna Mundi or Arsenal of Democracy teams got a licence from Paradox and did it themselves.
