Really we should just be thankful that PI even includes this option to start on any date in the time period...that's a hell of a lot of research that they had to do for a rarely-used feature. That's what I'd be thinking if I saw something wrong anyway.

Then I ask again what's actually different about them. The army sizes?

The only thing I see in the code about bookmarks is an identification of the day they're on, their descriptions, and the recommended countries. Am I missing something or are these 'pre-balanced' differences hardcoded?
The bookmarked startdates get more attention to them when it comes to historical accuracy. I think that what he means with "balancing"

That's what was confusing me. Historical accuracy in this game is merely the name and dates of the reigning monarchs, advisors, generals, alliances, wars, and the ownership/occupation of provinces. That's not something that can be selectively applied to just certain points in time, Paradox has put in a lot of effort to keep them correct across the whole period. There's nothing special about the bookmarked start dates in that regard.

You'd be surprised at how much they skip. The vast majority of wars nevr actually show up in any startdates, but the provinces are instead just switched during peacetime. Switzerland goes directly from not existing at all to having it's current borders, completely ignoring all the time it took for those borders to actually get where they are.
Though as mentioned, for me it's not as much about historical accuracy as about informing the player about what the biggest events in the time period are.

At what point in the timeline did Switzerland not exist?

Examples like that are a result of not wanting to slow down the game with tons of new tags for Swiss minors rather than lack of effort on Paradox's part, I would imagine. After all, they could subdivide other HRE states like Bavaria just as much as they could the Swiss. Even if it were laziness on their part, it wouldn't point to a prioritization of bookmarked dates over the others, but rather simple historical error.

People almost always just play from the start anyway

I honestly can't imagine I'd ever play a game from a date later than the start. That's one of the biggest turn-offs for me in CK2, the game seems designed to only be challenging for about 100 years after your start date. Playing from beginning to end is just tedium. The EU series just should never be like that.

But no one plays those bookmarks anyway (especially one 300 years in...) so whatever historical accuracy they have is inconsequential. And it's not about informing the player about events of the time period because...again they're going to make their own history.

That's not necessarily true. Starting at later games can be fun, especially if you've already played games as most of the major powers, and many of the minor ones from the original start date.

After all, they could subdivide other HRE states like Bavaria just as much as they could the Swiss. The Swiss example is a particularly devilish one - and the decision on what was done there had very little to do with "slowing down the game" I'd think. The newer engine has more capability than the older. Also, I don't think dividing Bavaria is just like "dividing" Switzerland.

There is a lot of effort, time and work involved in making an accurate bookmark. If you want a bookmark done comprehensively and done in a way that does justice to the date that is being high-lighted, a lot of different factors need to be dealt with. I hope Paradox will include a bookmarked date for the Austrian Succession; one that is done right. I will understand if it is not included however; I remember working on this exact date in my own work and I remember what was involved.

Almost no one uses the later start dates - Paradox have gathered statistics on these things in the past.

This is also why they tend to leave some interesting start dates out of the vanilla games and expect the modding community to pick them up if they so desire.

Policies and diplomatic relations, yes, but armies, navies, economy, and buildings are automatically generated at your start date, not custom designed. I've never seen any evidence to the contrary.

So you're angry because you don't know how to use the select date feature and start at the beginning of the war yourself? Sounds like a personal problem.
And honestly if they're going to put the war of Austrian Succession in then they should add the Great Northern War in, and the birth Frederick The Great because its so important that he was born and what else he did in his life that they should bookmark it. While they're at it they need to bookmark the day that England settled Jamestown because it was the first successful English colony in North America, and then bookmark the day the Spanish beat the Aztecs and forced them into slavery!

See I can use the argument as well and sound just as intelligent as you do while doing it. (yes that was an insult)

If they were to add in every "important" date into the game there would be more bookmarks than you can count.

Never mind the War of the Austrian Succission, there should be a War of Jenkins' Ear bookmark if only because the name is brilliant.

Seriously though, a Wars of the Three Kingdoms bookmark and events would be nice.

Yeah bookmark dates are far more accurate as you can not expect them ot accurately represent every year. However the bookmarks are where they spend alot of accuracy and is closer then in the none bookmarked dates.

I'm not actually angry, or even annoyed. "Confused" would be a more appropriate term.

Also none of the examples you gave actually fits. The Great Northern War starts one year before the War of the Spanish Succession, which is already in. Any startdate being included because someone "will" do something important and not because of anyone actually doing anything important is obviously pretty useless. Jamestown only affects England and noone else. The only really important event besides the War of the Austrian Succession I can think of is The Reformation, but I don't know what date a Reformation bookmark should be in.

Alot of you are saying that all the bookmarks besides the first are useless and i can definitely see where you're coming from, but Paradox obviously doesn't agree on that, otherwise they wouldn't even bother creating all these bookmarks to begin with.
