Example. Tunisia is so close to Genoa owning Sardinia that Genoese could most likely throw rocks over there from their island. Yet there's no Holy War CB for Genoese over Tunis. At the same time, despite being divided by thousands of kilometres of steppe, Golden Horde has such a CB on its Russian neighbours.

Why's that? Why can't we have CB when two provinces are sharing sea border, for example border the same sea province? Why's it specific to land border? There were crusades all over North Africa...

Agreed. Also every other CBs should check for that as well? I mean how hard is it to get a CB against Cyprus or such... :D

As far as I know, provinces share a 'sea border' with ever other province which borders any sea on the map (for an example of this, capitals can only be taken in a war when either they or every other province is landlocked, as otherwise London 'borders' the carribbean)

Just to make note, to get the Holy War CB you need one of any of these: A land link, Divine Supremecy, Unam Sanctum, be Defender of the Faith or be an Empire.

Or, as the OP notes, a Crusade. Call a Crusade against Tunisia, and even land-locked Anhalt will get a Holy War CB on it.

Why can't sea link be equal to land link? Game doesn't track proximity?

equating "sea link" and "land link" would be wondering why *Aragon* doesn't get a Holy War CB against Granada.

You either border a country or you don't.

That said, it would probably be *possible* to have a check for "adjacent to same seazone", the question would be if it's CPU-economically feasible. Direct adjacency is a lot easier than "share an adjacency".

Point taken, although the OP has a point, too. IRL, there'd be all sorts of friction between the sailors of each nation. Even without HW, such a position could lead to a CB.

Related question: how is the Crusade distance determined? It has always seemed to me absurd that Spain cannot declare a Crusade against the Ottos.

FRICTION? Seriously? Is that the word you're going to use to describe relations in the region? :)

Dude, whole Barbary Coast was a freaking THORN in the side of Europeans sailing in the Mediterranean for like EIGHT centuries. They hated barbary pirates so much that they deserve a CB on their own...

I wasn't speaking of the specific case or even of religious differences, but the general geographical situation. I had in mind an occasional CB for any countries sharing a sea zone. Obviously, there should be more representation of the Barbary pirates in the game. (And the Knights should flat out have a permanent CB on all Moslem states. Really, they should be permanently at war, but that wouldn't work in the game engine.)

Yeah, Knights were professional pirates too. :)

The situation was that whole swaths of Italian, French and Spanish coast were deserted until 19th century because it wasn't safe to settle there. And in EU3 there's no CB on them.

Try to imagine a Spanish or a French king saying "we're sending a navy to kill some barbary pirates!" and the whole country turning into chaos because of how outrageous that decision seems to be...
