I've noticed when playing Sweden, the Ai navies act frustratingly stupid. Take England as my ally. It has around 50 ships and a super strong naval power. So I am fighting Denmark in a war with England as my ally. Denmark has 20 ships, England has 50 ships and I have 15 ships. Easy naval dominance right?? Wrong, cause for some reason the Ai navy of England avoid the Baltic like the plague. That is bull****. So instead of helping me for example in a naval battle in the straits of Oresund The English Navy seems to be stuck in Skagerak, and will NEVER ever sail one tile south to help in the actual war vs the country we are at war with. So England with the biggest strongest navy in the world just won't enter the baltic to face a nave a 1/3 of it's size which it would easily crush. All cause the seems to be some programming saying the AI navies aren't allowed to sail more than certain distance from their home country or something asinine like that.
And even if they would suffer some minor attrition, the navy would be out of there in no time after crushing the enemy's navy. Makes no sense....

England doesn't want to fight galleys (which is what Denmark likely have) in the inland sea, so they wait for them to come out, but Denmark is happy to suffer blockade if it allows them to keep control of the Baltic. So from point of view of both nations the stalemate is quite satisfactory

I don't think that's really the case the AI is more than happy to throw 20 regiments at 10 regiments in a mountain I don't see why the overblown English fleet laden with heavies would be unwilling to attack a much smaller fleet with allied support the odds are far better. This must be really irritating but England's hate of entering the Baltic has saved me a lot of aggro in that region when they get called in against me since they only ever seemed to enter with their navy to drop off troops on somebody in the mainland then run off again never bothering with Scandinavia or blocking straits.

I just made a try as Sweden with the Extended Vanilla Experience Mod. Independence War started in 1445 with only England on my side. They landed 14 000 men in Norway, fought the Danes out of Sweden then crossed to the islands with me and took over all of Denmark. Their fleet didnt go deep in the Baltic but it stayed in Kattegat in the inland sea. It seems that scared the enemy, the Danes didnt try to defend the straits and i reach 98% warscore in 1448 when i stopped the war winning my independence, 5 provinces and small money.

My small fleet stayed at dock all the war with Stockholm blockaded and I was not able to cross to Gotland but my allies did more than I hoped tough I dont think they fought a single battle with their ships.

A few years later England made a landing in Austria trying to defend Venice.

IIRC AI does not suffer sea attrition. I dont know what are the rules AI has to follow concerning fleet range.

Had a similar experience as the OP.
Independence war, England and Scotland as allies, British fleet never sails further than Helgoland Bight, while their 30k strong amphibious landing force just sits in Midtjylland and helplessly stares across the water towards Fyn and Sjaelland.

Ya, just makes zero sense that a huge English fleet with heavies avoids an enemy it would crush in no time just cause it's inland sea.
Denmark's navy is so weak in comparison, but without the english help in the war it will be insanely hard to gets to all the islands in the baltic.
So with the biggest navy in the world as an ally nearby you still lose the naval war which is stupid

When I play as England, I hate allying with Sweden, because I keep having to purchase naval basing to do anything in the Baltic. Even after I rob Norway of their North Sea Islands, Shetland barely gets me to Lubeck. Further, I often have to peace out first, because Sweden never gives me the islands I want when they win.

Looks like the AI has a problem determining the actual combat power of Galleys. Would explain all those galleys that come in from the Med or the Baltic to invade England, only to get sunk along with their transports and troops by the Royal Navy.
