Migrants in Australia, USA or Mexico assimilate to native populations instead of assimilating to accepted cultures. I have milions Hokan, Aboriginal or Afro-Brazilian pops, which does not make sense at all.

It’s the small pop merge rather than assimilation. Pdox has increased the size at which pops would merge to improve performance, but they merge into the largest pop in a state rather than the largest accepted pop.

Potato, potato.
It's a process in which pops change their culture and behaviour. The technicalities of it are secondary.

It's an unfortunate case of whats techincally feasible to simulate and what would be desireable immersion wise. The release version strictly gave preference to the latter and the result were countless mini-pops all over the world created by migration...and those mini pops did what pops love to do in Vic3: Subdividing into even smaller "micro pops" because of partly changing occupation or religion.

They can assimilate to accepted pops. No difference performance-wise.
that’s why i asked if it’s accepted or unaccepted migrants merging with unaccepted natives, and the answer was that the migrants are unaccepted. so it’s just birds of a feather flocking together. or am i misunderstanding something?

That depends if there are accepted pops in the state, with the same pop type, and working in the same building. If the accepted pops are small then the likelihood of all of those isn't all that great.

If you’re playing as the United States, most of the immigrants are European and then you are getting accepted pops merging into Native American pops which are not accepted.

So no, not birds of a feather flocking together at all.

oh, i see

it’s not entirely out of consideration though. there are several people that prominently identify themselves as the indigenous populace without actual biological ties

see for example:

and these are just two that made their way into the world press. from holidays i recall quite a few people larping as at least partly indigenous despite not showing any apparent relation or being able to prove their claim via dna analysis. nevertheless, gameplay-wise merging micro pops was a good decision that made the game run pretty smoothly for me

Ok, so millions of europeans assimilate into native population who they thought were not even humans are no big deal now. Consider me convinced.

I really don't think this is transferable to the game's timeframe. Back then (partial) Indigenous (or generally hyphenated) ancestry was stigmatized, while now it arguably confers some social benefit - the incentives are reversed.

Not entirely out of consideration like the movie dances with wolves is one thing. Hundreds of thousands of European settlers becoming Dakota is another.

Anyway I think gameplay benefits are real, just hope they change it to target the largest non-discriminated pop as the one to merge into, not just the largest pop in that state.

It should be a minor enough change IMO

hehe i guess so. it’s still somewhat funny how accurate vic3 manages to, unintentionally, model reality

It seems like discriminated pops should merge with the largest discriminated pop and non-discriminated pops should merge with the largest non-discriminated pop. It’s not supposed to be a way to skip assimilation/conversion mechanics.

Actually, what I wish paradox would do is merge the pops but maintain a memory of the proportions of different types. Then periodically if any gets large enough they could split off again. And the UI could still keep the complexity for immersion (though with a marker so the player knows it’s part of a merged pop). This shouldn’t cause any perf issues as the game could still use the largest culture and religion in the merged pop for all calculations.

It's not unaccepted pops merging for the simple fact that there are no unaccepted migrants, pops literally will not migrate, even internally, unless they are accepted in the target country.
