Why isn't this game called France Universalis IV?

It fits the name so well and well..... France is Europe... basically. It eats it up so fast.

Seriously though, France is just INSANE. They smash through everything so easy. Even big empires like Spain.

(if I remember properly, France was always the most populated united country in Europe till late 18th century where it was overcomed by Russia. In 16th century France had population approximately: 4x bigger than England, 2x bigger than Spain, 2x bigger than entire Commonwealth and similar to the population of an entire Ottoman Empire spanning on three continents; Sweden in it's most imperial period had like 5% of French income>

Well of course there is. If France doesn't expand and win battles. Then your game should be returned back.

I will admit, though, that I thought France would see the biggest proportional increase to its income in 1.8 with the new trade map. Maybe we should call it Portugal Universalis.

You don't, though. In my current Friesland>Netherlands game I have beaten them in many battles with a 1:1 ratio. Probably in part because I went Defensive ideas and Reformed, so my morale is better than theirs. Ultimately, I think all this complaining about France is overblown. If I can beat them starting as an OPM just north of them, they aren't overpowered.

There are four(4) end nodes in the game. Portugal, Venice, Spain and England each controls half a node. France controls one and half a node. Italian minors control the remaining half node.

France isn't overpowered.

They constantly hold more land than in history in Europe. But they also constantly fail to control as many colonies as they historically did. Perhaps their idea order needs some tweaking?

I just played a game as Portugal, never attempting to do anything on Europe. Brittany, Burgandy, and Dauphine dominated the area leaving France with 3 disjointed provinces.

In my last game England ate up 50% of France. After that it lost 1 big war and it started going downhill, yet it's 1700s and France is yet to conquer ALL of the french proper lands.

Approx 3 out of 4 in my games end up with underperforming France and an Uber Austria.

If you have to fight France 4:1 you haven't picked the appropriate ideas etc for fighting France.

France is the largest land power during the game's era in Europe. It's makes sense that it's difficult to defeat. I never saw France eating all its neighbours and growing way beyond their historical frontiers.
