Why is there a protestant and reformed Defender of the Faith?

I never really thought much about this, but protestantism is specifically meant to be a decentralized religion, with each of its states having their own state churches, so how is there a protestant DoF? Same for Reformed (arguably moreso, since Reformed Calvinism and the likes are more "radical" than Lutheran protestantism)

Maybe because both Christian IV of Denmark (unsuccesful) and Gustav Adolph (more successful) had that role.

Because PDX insists on being inconsistent with DoTF mechanic. All Christian and Islam denominations can have DoTF, but not all religions!

Ironically, the title of Defender of Faith was given by the Pope to Henry VIII for his anti-Lutheran writings.

The whole mechanic is just a gimmick that gives Christian/Muslim players an extra missionary while fucking over minority religions. To quote myself from another thread

You sometimes even get the laughable situation of the Timurids 'defending' Brunei against Kutai, without a navy. Have fun sitting on a full occupied Brunei for 5 years.

The new defender of faith mechanics have absolutely ruined smaller countries that are not Catholic or Sunni (Serbia, Mzab, Oman, Ryazan, etc.), because the AI will instantly re-buy DoF as soon as they lose it, or if they don't one of the several other great powers will. Does barely white peacing France out as Serbia after a grueling war, only to have Spain going 'lol 500 ducats go brrr' and taking DoF instantly sound like a fun experience to you? Or how about bankrupting yourself fighting both Tunis and the Mamluks as Mzab only to realise that fucking Kilwa has somehow taken DoF.

And of course, due to how AI military access works, you won't actually be able to reach whoever's the defender of faith, while they'll send doomstacks that carpet siege your puny countryside.

The worst is the ai is currently taking it way too early. before 16hundreds makes the game as minor annyoning especially in the empire or annywhere in central Europe because of how buggy the reformation is. Either op as fuck or no one converts. They should have events for scandinavia to go protestant though. Was one of the reasons it did survive.
I had a recent game as France. Where the Ottoman had debt and I was too lazy to play a war, so I was yeah I pay you the money you fight. He had 500 debt. In the end I payed over 1500 because the first time he did somehting I could not see. The second time he bought defender of faith. At that point I was crying, because Paradox should really just give the button of debt repaying also for major powers. Especially for players against ai.
But it just proves when the ai has the money they take it. Also Poland had before 1500 defender of faith...

Giving DotF to all Christian and Muslim religions is more of a game balance decision than one based upon history. DotF is a fairly powerful mechanic and to lock some sects out would have tilted the playing field too much.

DotF reflects the animosity between Christian and Muslims, and between the various Christian sects and Muslim sects. There was usually some ruler who would claim the mantle to defend their faith, either because of their beliefs or for pure political motives.

Asian religions never really went towards the convert to our way or die, with a few exceptions. The Mongols were especially noted for being very tolerant. As long as you paid your taxes and prayed for the Khan's good health they didn't care who or what you worshipped. Very much like the early Romans in that way. And like the Romans, they had little patience with anyone who claimed theirs was the only true God and all must convert. Bad for trade, bad for peace. That was one of their issues with the Muslims, along with the Khorasmian shah being both greedy and exceedingly stupid. Confiscating one of Genghis Khan's caravans, executing some his diplomats, and shaving off the beards of the rest has to win the Darwin Award of the Century, if not Millenium.

By the way, this mechanic is a leftover from EU 3 that works basically the same as it did in that game. Emperor was the really significant shake up yet.
