Probably due to the 14 meg total size of the patched files...

.rar is similar to .zip although I'm not sure where to download the proper shareware to unpack it

www.rarlab.com get it there and the installer takes longer to make than a simple rar pack my guess is that's why
when 1.5 comes out it will be pack in a installer.exe file.

It takes Johan much longer to compile an installer compared to just an archive. Installers are needed for official patches as nobody can suppose all customers can or want to download a specific program and learn to use it to get their product to work, but betas don't have that requirement. People who use them do it knowing some effort is required from them as well.

EDIT Oh, and rar format does a better job with this kind of files than winzip.
