When Hitler and Mussolini made the Anticomintern Pacl one of them (can't remember who)claimed that the axis around which Euroepan politics now revolved was that of Berlin-Rome.
But Japan didn`t enter the anticomintern until 1941 did they? Just prior to Barbarossa and about the same time they signed the non-agression pact with the USSR.
I think the original name AXIS refered to Berlin/Rome, and when Japan joined the name just remained. Not sure though...

The Axis Rome-Berlin (Asse Roma-Berlino) was a pact signed on 24 Otc. 1936 by Italy and Germany: the 2 powers stated their opposition to Communism and decided to help Francisco Franco, Germany recognized the Italian annexion of Ethiopia. The Anti-Komintern Pact was signed on 25 Nov. 1936 by Germany and Japan, and then also Italy (6 Nov. 1937) and other nations (Hungary, Manchukuo, etc.) signed it.

Just cause warlord Bush might refer to them as such, I don't think they are quite comparable to Berlin/Rome in they don't share technologies or embrace similiar ideologies save a saddening hatred for the western world... But then again they even do that for completely seperate reasons, Iran primarily for religious reasons (and political if you are talking about just the US, after all when Iran tried to install a democracy, the US funded terrorists to topple it and reinstall the pro-US monarch), not that it in any way justifies shedding blood, just an explination of the situation. N. Korea on the other hand is almost purely political, the western world splitting a country that had stood between the rock of China and the hardplace of Japan for uncoutable centuries and somehow remarkably held together their own culture, not to mention sovreignity. I'm tiring of Bush's soviet era politics of calling the other side "evil", just as every Russian wasn't a nuke wielding madman, not every North Korean is a bloody thirsty asian with nuke wielding aspirations.... Right, so i've said my piece.
