Both Carpathian and the West Slavic group is lackluster compared to any of the neighboring culture group so I would merge the 2 into 1 group. It would makes sense game wise as Poland, Hungary and Bohemia gets PU or are encouraged to conquer the other 2 in their mission tree. Would be good to make Bohemia and Hungary both formable tag just like Poland. In this case Nitra/Transylvania/hungarian cultured country can form Hungary while Glogow/Opole/Czech cultured country can form Bohemia.
Nah Hungarian and transylvanian should be in the German culture group with how pro German they were

I miss the days when cultures inside a culture groups weren't all one province/sea zone away from each other. Felt more like history is strange and encouraged me to research why people groups seemed to just hop and skip over other culture groups.

Culturally both Hungarian and Slovak should be part of the West Slavic group.
The Carpathian group was created so both Hungary and Wallachia can have the ludicrous "Transylvanian" culture tolerated within its borders. I guess paradox had enough of the back and forth agreements whether Romanians were legionary shepherds wintering in the Carpathians for a millennia without any material evidence or some south Balkan culture migrating into old Cumania and Transylvania between the 13th and 15th century.
You are absolutely right, it's stupid. This argument has the same depth as Poland and Hungary not being historical friends because then the Ottomans get rekt, thus Hungary and Poland are eternal rivals in this game.

Language does not define culture. Neither language nor culture defines how groups treat each other, which in theory is the basis for the games "cultural group" system.

A huge amount of unnecessary discussion that gets repeated every month or so could be avoided if people remembered this.

Do you have any evidence as to what the “basis for the culture group” is ?

This would honestly be the best solution.

West Slavic and Carpathian are both weak groups, making them into a unified Central European group would help a lot.

The problem with the OP is that his notion is that Slovak is culturally closer to West Slavic.

However it fails to realize that in history slovaks were just as close to both really.

Not only that, in the modern day the 4 countries, Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary and Poland are still very culturally similar and they were in history as well.

There are cultural differences, obviously, but the differences are better explained by the distance between Dutch and North or South German than to be a completely different thing.

Furthermore, the Kingdoms were at times unified under a single monarch and they mostly used similar military means, such as Hussars.

So I think it's clear that they should just form a single group. This would also help a long way with a defensive barrier against the Ottomans in the early game.

The winged hussars of Poland were very different to the light hussars of Hungary. Same culture group to deter Ottos would be interesting, as you have some jagellions rule both thrones, who fight against the Ottos, but also the Prince of transylvania who marries the Queen of Poland and keeps Transylvania's subservience to Ottos.
If same culture group a coalition would build far faster, but if not in PU, would the kingdoms just be happy to partition the other with Ottos taking the other bit

Historically, Basque country was fairly autonomous up until the 19th century. While Basque is a language isolate, it also has culturally links to the rest of Iberia. In other words, a Basque person would regard a Castilian king as less "foreign" than an English one. It would be silly to assert that Basque culture did not exist, but it would also be silly to deny its cultural links with the rest of Iberia.
Bsaque country did not exist until Sabino Arana invented the concept in the XX century. The Kingdom of Navarre did and it not only comprised basque lands but also territories in which the influence was french, castilian or even aragonese. Even though the basque culture has a really distinct language, it is accurate to represent It under the iberian culture group in terms of gameplay, given how easiliy Navarre was assimilated into Spain.

I've never read any comment other than the fringe lingo-groupers who tried to establish a weird Finno-Ugric group any argument against Hungarians being in the West Slavic group.

Do you have any evidence as to what the “basis for the culture group” is ?
There is no evidence, it's quite literally what the culture system is. Some groups treat each other well and thus they are easier to rule. Ethnic similarity is a common cause of this, but not the only one.

Actually no. I mean I'm not a dev and I can't speak for them but this is what I think. There are examples of cultural groups that are in there for balance, but that's not the basis, that's modifying it after the fact.
