ask paradox nicely if you can work on updating the game, they allowed it for lost empire

but you would have to do as they say + contracty stuff

or they could say no

Ask them to mod the game, you mean? Or as an actual position on the team?

Look at Arsenal of Democracy. A group of modders asked for the source code to Hearts of Iron 2 so they could develop it further. They were granted it to develop on it. That is what he is suggesting people do with EU: Rome.

Well AFAIK the last DW patch was released in July 2011. The last VV patch was released in August 2010 and introduced a basically game-breaking bug. Then it takes more than a year for a beta patch to come along to fix this, and it has a lot of annoying bugs as well. I understand that there are many other communities waiting for another patch, but I think decisions concerning priority of patching should take into account the severity of the bugs needing to be fixed.
How do you know it doesn't? Have you seen the list of issues that 5.2 is addressing, including at least two CTD causes?

Yes, you are correct on that one, and magna mundi, and darkest hour, and those are just the ones being sold, let alone the free ones . Notice a pattern here. Seems like modders are the ones doing the work that developers can't, or sometimes won't do. Not that paradox is alone, I got the same vibe when I was a fan of total war. I mean what is a better game, Rome total war or Rome Total Realism/ Europa Barbarorum? What's better, Medieval 2 or Stainless Steel? Now, I don't think TW holds a candle to paradox games, in fact I got into paradox games after I got tired of the shallowness of TW. But I always am concerned when I hear of support for games being finished by modders instead of by the developers. Sure, I think developers can't do it all, and modding should be encouraged, but the presence of the latter should never be an excuse for the development being half finished. That is however a sentiment that all too often I here from forums: "it's okay, the modders will fix the problem, give them time" If that is the case, modders need to be hired out for their efforts. Glad to see that that is happening on several titles at paradox lately so that is a good step.

Actually, the interesting thing to me is that CKII was projected to be a major failure - remember back when they held a vote as to what the next game should be...

Neither Fredrik nor Johan thought CKII would fly at all...and now look, the thing is selling well, and is a very solid success for PI. Hopefully we can convince them that the same thing can happen with a revised and improved Rome II!

a paradox game is never 'finished'
however when sales dwindle which funds exatcly are used for continued develop ment by paradox?
modders arent trying to keep there lives funded so they can continue beyond paradox

I, for one, would love to have access to the source code. Wouldn't have a clue where to start actually modifying it, but still.

Me too! I have very little knowledge of that kind of coding but with trial and error is the best way :p Now that the discussion is turning into Rome 2 may I ask if someone is willing to start doing it as a mod for Vae Victis? My own idea is to start around 300 A.D and modify the game to have East and West Rome, barbarian invasions, Islamic caliphates and their conquest etc. but yet I haven't got anything really big done.

Again, like before the patch when we all were annoyed by the cascading alliances bug, it just requires us players to step up and do something. Take the game, mod it. Mod it until you break it. Fix it and mod more. Punch it into the face, beat the problem out of it.
We have good examples of that been done, Mare Nostrum will be simply crazy when it gets released, we have Magna Terra multiplying the amount of provinces and nations several times, Epigoni mod, Reign of the Ancients adding whole new mechanics to the game (and exactly beating some of the problems of it out i.e. title mechanism) and such so why wouldn't we be able to create something pretty close to "Rome 2" out of what we have if things like these have already been done?

I know that none of us is getting paid for the modding and basically nobody "has to do it" so nobody has same motivation as game developers but neither any of us has to do that modding 8 hours a day

This was a big problem for Rome, it has always had the potential to be a great game, but never got popular enough for a big mod community - who is going to put the work in for free to make one when only 5 people will download it? Magna Mundi for EU3 has in many ways created this problem, in that with out it EU3 is (imo!) unbearable, and there is an extent to which all vanilla p'dox games are a bit basic and easy, and never utilise their own potential (EU:Rome!).

Though waiting for a good mod is somewhat risky, and means that essentially the game needs a whole other (free) project team modding it, with regular updates to their own mods, which is unlikley to happen (who is /that/ commited to a game apart from Ubik?)

Well, it did take about 10 years of constant pestering from us CK1 fans! As for Rome, it is 5 years old and never really had a massive playing community, it is problem in the forum group it should be in, sadly.

It never became popular enough within modding community for a reason. It offers maybe 10% modding possibilities that EUIII, VIC2 or now CK2 do. Look at the effects, triggers. Even after VV it's still a very shallow and primitive - regarding usual PI standards - sandbox game. Frankly speaking, Rome's sad end is only PI's fault.

I don't know, I thought the guys who did mod it where doing a pretty good job at making it better. It's just there was no one there to play them and no support from paradox to keep the game stable enough to run them.

It is true that Rome's demise is P#dox's fault though, I never felt they gave it the time and attention it deserved.

I still always will say that the reason that companies don't give games the attention they deserve is because people who purchase the games are content with letting modders fix half broken games. As long as someone does it, the players are happy, and the developer gets away with churning out unfinished games and adding beta patches before moving on the the next games. Don't get me wrong, pdox is better than some developers. But the more they are makeing new games and new expansions, the more they seem to be dropping previous projects, or handing them off to modders. I am playing Darkest Hour now, which is the example of modders saving games that developers have forgotten. The developers could have made HOI 3 as good as Darkest Hour, and yet with all its eye candy and paid expansions, HOI3 is still getting complaints (and is too much for my computer even on low settings) , while a 10 dollar game like DH for me seems to have done wonders to an old engine. with more work being not only promuised but done. Truth is there are still modders at work on Rome, and I wish the same had been considered to support the modders if they were going to drop the project. Treat every game you put out there with equal care, and you show your customers that you care about them all equally as well, not just because they happened to get lucky and choose the "popular" game of the bunch.
