I wasn't sure if this was big enough to belong in its own thread, but here goes...

I'm playing as the Byzantine Empire with all the DLC, and the latest version of CKPlus.

I started a 1066 game, and everything was going well. I recreated the pentarchy, and I'm leading holy war after holy war to reunite the Roman empire.

That's when I get a notice that I'm going to lose all my titles on sucession.

I see the the inheritor is a newborn who doesn't seem to be related to me by blood, and is of a different dynasty. I do some hunting, and it looks like he's my great grandson, through one of my daughters.

I'm in my late fifties, and it looks like my descendants all had children when they were teenagers. Now this kid is my heir, while my two direct sons were downgraded to pretenders.

Is this supposed to happen? Did I miss something?

Also, two more quick and minor questions:

I took Rome and the Duchy of Latium, and after holding it for a couple of years, the Papcy has apparently taken back Rome and recreated itself, even though Catholicism has been downgraded to a heresy. Since I left Rome in the hands of an orthodox patriarch/prince-bishop, I'm guessing that some sort of event led to them giving back up to the pope or something?

Second, before I quit my game, one of my dukes started revoking the titles of all his counts and barons. Is that normal?

But those last two are minor. What should I do about my succession problem?

Does he has the "born to the purple" trait? That would explain.

A lower heir who is born in the purple outranks any not born in the purple.

I can think of no reason other than perhaps elective succession. It really depends on your succession laws. Males should still inherit ahead of females. Do your sons only have daughters? That can also muddle things quite a bit.

As for Rome, you would have to have been invaded under normal circumstances unless perhaps your vassal whom you gave Rome to might have converted and given the land to the Pope? I cannot say.

Dukes can go nuts in the tyranny area if they have vassals who they just cannot get along with.

Wow, thanks for all the quick responses!

No, the born in the purple trait was the first one I looked for. He only has the "toddler" trait.

So it looks like my daughter married one of my vassals. She had a son, who wasn't of my dynasty, of course, and then he had my great-grandson. The weird thing is that my grandson doesn't have any titles. His only claims are on two duchies. He's the spymaster for one of my dukes, but other than that he's just a courtier.

All of my direct sons have many children, including males. None of them are born in the purple, though. As far as I know, there are no characters alive aside from my younger brothers that have the purple trait. My succession is agnatic-cognatic primogeniture.

As for Rome, I don't know, as I wasn't watching too closely. I just happened to look and see that the papacy was back.

And yeah, that duke is really going nuts. He's also my half-brother...

now, how in hell the grandson can have the 'born in purple' if his grandfather -the current Emperor- is still alive?? explain me that
Not sure how the trait works, TBH. I have not yet played as the imperial family since LoR.

Noted, but why didn't My grandson just inherit then? Why did it skip to my newborn great grandson? To be fair, this is the first game I've played where my character is actually alive at the same time as a "great" descendant.

I've had some bizarre experiences with Byzantium, myself. I had matrilineally married my daughter off to the oldest brother of the current emperor--how the current emperor got the job without being Born in the Purple, I don't know. After killing the emperor's children, a different brother and his kids took precedence over the oldest brother, despite not being Born in the Purple either. After I killed him and his kids, finally the oldest brother became heir, though he died before the current emperor did. Upon the emperor's death, the oldest brother's younger of his two daughters became emperor! It's like they were running some kind of youth-preference succession.

Nobody is going to be able to definitively answer. It has to do with running Agnatic-Cognatic and your eldest daughter having children before dieing herself. It's been broken and I don't think anyone knows why.
