I don't see that. I have general much much older than that. They seem to live 10-20 years. But make your king a general and he will survive only 3-6 months on average. For some idiotic reason he plays by different rules.

Is it just bad luck?

In my recent England game my generals, admirals, conquistadores and explorers also dropped like flies. But, every 75-100 years I got a general that lasted longer than the others (like 15-25 years) increasing the average a bit.
Same story for my kings - most of them don't reign for longer than 7-15 years, only a few made it to 20 years.

Even though it's just part of the game, sometimes I think it's a bit frustrating.

PS. In my first EU3 game ever (as Portugal), I had a king (João II, I'll never forget ;) ) who reigned for about 110 years. So don't ask me how old he got! As he was not such a great king, I started to get desperate to get rid of him (but I never tried to make him fight impossible battles though).

I've noticed that my monarchs don't seem to live very long, e.g. 5-10 years. What do other folks experience?

My generals seem to die pretty fast. Usually during peace time too.
I will get involved in a war where I have poor quality generals and low tradition. Then as I get further along in the war I recruit better generals because I have gotten higher tradition. Once the war is over and I'm into peace time all my generals start dying and by the time I get involved in another war I have low tradition and so can only recruit poor quality generals again.

How long did generals live? you have to be a reasonably seasoned officer to be appointed general and then you move with the troops for 20 years. My average seems to be 20 btw. Quite commendable.

But with kings and queens it is indeed somewhat odd, as some of them come to power quite young.

Basically, its a consequence of how character death works. The game lacks any kind of realistic aging system: Characters have a 5% chance to die each year right out of the recruitment button and Monarchs have a even higher chance to die if you make them general, whether they go into battle or not. The exception is advisors who will always live at least 10 years.

If you're unlucky, a brand new general can die after one year of service and no sign of battle.

Good generals and rulers die quickly, bad ones tend to last a lot.

That's the consequence of your brain taking more internal notes when the game goes against you than when it goes your way. :p
