Just a question to the devs.. why is it forbidden to play any nation? I think we all know, that with a simple adjustion on the .exe you can unlock each nation, however i wonder why paradox "forbidds" to play any other nation, while the game is 20 years only anyway.. so why the reason to restrict it?

And what also bothers me: why dont you guys make it hard coded, when you dont want people to change it?

I want to point out, that i didnt change stuff, but i´m pretty much aware of it, since those.. cracked versions are pretty much used by nearly everyone in my steam group, which has far over 100 members; since i´m only playing portugal i dont need it anyway. Still i wonder why the demo is limited like this.. and i cant think bad of the guys useing those .exe, since most of them already bought the game and it doesnt unlock the entire game but only some more factions.. if you dont want people to create such modifications, why dont you make it hardcoded? Why do you let it be possible to change the start nations when you dont want it to be changed?

You guys know that steam offers temporary demo versions? You could just release a demo via steam without country restriction, where everyone can play anything, you could even release the entire game as demo and tell steam to "shut it down" with release. I dont get it why you guys dont make use of that neat service, since it would be more beneficial for everyone i guess.

Everything in this post is a question @ Johann..

The same way people are unlocking nations, they are unlocking the time limit. I suspect the reason is, people are playing the full game for free.

I don't know where you picked up this term 'hard coded' but it IS. Thats why it's an exe hack to bypass it.

Interesting, didnt know that it also removes the time limit Oo, but even if, you still cant play multiplayer nor save your game, nor start 1444, also the game was just 500 mb large.. i cant imagine that the entire game is that small Oo, there must be a lot lacking.

I dont know, i doubt that anyone who got that illegal crack and likes it will NOT buy eu4, its rather the other way around, most people already bought it i guess...

And why isnt paradox makeing use of steam for demo´s? Steam offers demo´s quite a lot, where you can download and play the full game for 3 days and have to buy it afterwards. I wonder why they havent done that..

Why don't you just wait like.. one day.

like i said, i dont care at all, , and its 1 day and 18 hours, anyway, its about the principle, about the reason why, it has no practical use. Ive got every paradox game in my shelf from eu1 to vic2 to hoi3 to ck2 and each expansion, so its not like i dont have something to play, nor if i care. Its just the thing that i clicked on A LOT of threads which became deleted by mods because someone was playing nations he wasnt supposed to play and i dont understand why you are forbidden to play them, if its actually possible to modify it.

However i didnt know that it was hardcoded and that the exe thing bypasses it. So that pretty much solved a lot of confusion to me.

In case I wasn't clear: hard-coded means built into the executable. So if you modify an executable, you're modifying the "hard code".

Because it's a demonstration, and it's a poor demonstration if all countries don't have their unique features loaded.

think you didnt get the question, i mean like coh2 steam beta, where everyone could play the full game on steam, which was then unable to access with game release.

i understand, kinda, quiet drunk, but i think i got it

UOTE=Ruanek;15924891]The demo is free. That's why you don't have every option. Otherwise, it wouldn't be a demo.[/QUOTE]

You all dont get what i mean.. god is no one of you useing steam?

On steam, for some games you have the option to play a game for free for a certain period of time, before you have to buy it (like 1-2 hours).

Same for the upcoming PS4, where you can play nearly ANY major game, without buying it for 1 hours.

So i wondered why paradox isnt doing something like that, instead of a demo, since eu4 is alread a steam only game, it would definately attract more people to buy the game i suppose

My answer is probably not gonna satisfy you, but I believe its also the most accurate you'll get: because Paradox made this game, they own it, and they decided so. They could decide not to release demo at all.
While I understand it may not make much sense to you - it doesn't have to. And I`m not being hostile saying that. Maybe they made an assumption that the majority of population the demo is aimed at, won't be the nerds who are on their forums anyway, as they've probably pre-ordered the game already. And for these non-forum users a demo in that shape is perfect, as it gives a taste of a game, but not too much, nor for too long. If you knew nothing about the game and you enjoyed playing any of the countries for 30 years - you will buy the full version. If you like the game concepts but, didn't really like the countries offered, you'll buy a full version to play another ones. If you didn't like the game at all, you probably wouldn't buy it anyway.

People on these forums tend to forget that most of the marketing PI does is not really aimed at us - big part of us is 'sold' anyway the moment a new title gets announced. The marketing a company (any company, not only PI) does is much broader - aimed at those who wouldn't hear about the product otherwise, to get their interest. I really doubt Paradox released a demo to satisfy hordes of people for whom 'X is overpowered' and always will be, and 'province Y should (always) be of another culture' etc, they don't make a demo to have their forums spammed with 10 topics about different countries being OPed (seriously - is EVERY country OPed according to the posters?). They make a demo to sell games in amount as high as possible. Simple as that.

It's also worth looking at the choices of countries offered. Say you've never played EU3 before, you don't know what you're doing, etc. You see a map with a bunch of countries and you pick one more or less at random. "I'm (supposedly) 1/64th Cherokee, I'll try Cherokee!" And then you don't really get a good sense of what the game is about. By funneling you into those 4 countries, they make sure you can try out the colonization/exploration, trade, diplomacy and war factors without getting overwhelmed. Remember that above all else the demo is a marketing tool, so they want you to buy the full game. The fact that it lets us try out the mechanics beforehand is just a side effect. By limiting your options they try to help you explore the features while at the same time making sure you have a reasonable experience.

Are people so naive or they're just pretending that playing other countries or without a time limit isn't akin to getting the whole game for free? And isn't that clear enough that it's not intented? No matter what files you DL, you get a licence for a demonstration, nothing more. Get real people.

I'd say Rubidium's answer is the closest - they picked countries specifically to highlight different features of the game - colonization with Portugal, HRE mechanics for Austria, trade for Venice, and...asskicking for the Ottomans. Although given that the first three have quite significant hurdles that may piss off newcomers (and the new "return cores" in peace negotiations pissed off a lot of vets who played Portugal), I'm not sure they picked the best scenarios for the demo.
