Why there is no option to change the government to non-aligned, using elections or referendums? Even with a massive majority, is impossible to switch to this ideology without using a focus tree.

I've thought about this since the day I bought the game and I find it frustrating that it's not possible to have "non-aligned referendums" or even just non-aligned advisors for various countries. It would be great if you could get non-aligned advisors in China to counter the democratic influence of the "Legislative Yuan" focus, or just if you would like to see some neat flags once you've conquered half the world as a fascist country.

My guess is we'll just have to wait for focus trees if we want to see more non-aligned advisors. The devs are increasingly moving the game into a direction of ideology being determined by focus tree and making it harder to flip back and forth depending on what is convenient.

The problem is that "Non-Aligned" is not an ideology. It's a placeholder for regimes that either didn't align with the three major factions, or for those that don't fit the three categories. "Non-Aligned" is everything else: non-fascist dictatorships, monarchies, theocracies, anarchists, neutral republics... You can't very well have a chunk of people that support the "Non-Aligned" cause, doing stuff like winning an election or demanding a referandum, except for nations with focus trees that give definitive answers to the question of "What does the Non-Aligned party represent in this nation?".

Hopefully, Paradox will stop trying to fit square pegs (complex political arrangements) into round holes (a 4-point "alignment"-based ideology system) and overhaul the ideology system one of these days.

I think that "non-aligned" means different things for different countries. In the game's time period, for most of Europe and the soon-to-be Third World, it means a reactionary authoritarian monarchy. In China, Latin America, Finland, Poland, and the Baltic states, "non-aligned" refers to right-wing, authoritarian republics. Neither of these differing types of "non-aligned" should necessarily be working hand-in-hand with each other. Sometimes they did or should be able to cooperate, but not always - there are a lot of differences between monarchists and republicans, even when they are both right-wing. When the devs (unwisely, in my opinion) chose to make anarchist Spain non-aligned, it threw another problem into the equation.

The quick fix would be to just put a little care and detail into each individual country that is non-aligned so that their referendum events correctly match which type of "non-aligned" is taking power in that country. Give them "non-aligned" advisors that correspond to the prevailing "non-aligned" value of that country. The long-term fix is to split "non-aligned" into at least three different ideologies, those being Monarchist, Authoritarian Republican, and Anarchist.

"non-aligned" is also the ideology for countries that are not intended to play a major part in the game, when in historical mode.

with the AI definitions, democracies tend to support democracies and hate fascists, communists help communists but are mostly indifferent to democracies and really hate fascists, fascists are largely indifferent to each other but hate communists, but none of them have strong feelings about non-aligned countries, and will rarely declare war on them without a national focus nudging them to.

Non-Aligned is just a catch-all of ideologies that aren't quite democratic, communist, or fascist, plus countries who ended up in the "wrong" faction, so to speak. So on the one end there are monarchists and anarchists, on the other you have Finland who was democratic but joined the Axis, and Fatherland Front of Austria which was Fascist but opposed the Nazis.

Finland never joined axis officially.

It really depends what you mean by the words "never", "joined", "axis" and "officially" ....

In pretty much every way except signing the Tripartite Pact they were a member of the axis. They were a base for German troops, they fought alongside the Germans, they were officially at war with both the UK and the USSR, they signed the Anti-Comintern Pact, etc. Yes, we all know the reasons why they did these things, but from a game perspective they should be members of the Axis up until they turned against the Germans.

(interestingly other countries we typically think of as Axis also did not sign the Tripartite Pact - Thailand, Manchukuo, and the other Japanese puppet states in Asia did not sign it).

Without the La resistance DLC Britain can boost any ideology and even bring about a non aligned coup. if you can manage to do one of the focuses against scandinava or the benelux..
