Revisiting this thread just to say that I'm on my third game now since uninstalling the LIfecycle Rebalance mod (it was conflicting with another mod anyway) and so far I have not experienced any large death waves like I used to. I see occasional spikes, but nothing as large as I used to see. Since I'm not playing the game any differently than before, they must really have fixed it in the base game.
