Is there any reason Paradox couldn't just rename Confucianism to Daoism and call it a day?
To OP and everyone else arguing, it's considered a religion for the sake of gameplay. That's it. Lazy effort or not, it gets the job done in terms of game mechanics (albeit a crappy one due to crappy bonuses).
I've seen threads like this before and it derails very quickly. The only thing that needs to change is Confucianism needs better bonuses, and for the sake of gameplay, that's it.
Confucianism is definitely not a religion. It is more like way of living or how to maintain good personal relationships. But I personally think most of them are bullshit, especially 五倫("five relationships" in English?).
I would say Daoism if I have to choose a religion for this region. Although I think Daoist clerics who believed in alchemy etc. is just a small part of population, Daoism is the closest thing I can get.
Why not give Confucianism large bonus to tolerance and add many provinces with Daoist, traditional Chinese, Bö, etc.?
The problem is there are hidden implications behind five relationships. The five relationships make perfect sense and apply even today.
Ruler-subject is basically the ancient version of employer-employee and government-citizen relationship today. Confucian advice like serving a righteous and wise ruler makes perfect sense to me. Why would I want to work for scumbag bosses and decrepit governance?
Father-son is basically parental-children relationship.
Husband-wife also pretty important.
And friend-friend as well.
Seems to have covered all bases to me.

The most disgusting one to me is the ruler-subject one - if you are subject, just behave yourself don't do anything disloyal. That's why some ruling dynasties adopted Confucianism.
But Confucianism in game as a Eastern religion is fine for me. It's just a game. More bonuses would be nice of course.
Confucianism is so influential that even now people still have that nonsensical thought to act as a loyal slave. Why would any ideology encourage the subject to be disloyal? That seems like failure in the making.

Let's not get this thread derailed.![]()
A non-ritualistic folk-religion. Belief in an afterlife and deities are the central tenant of religion. Gods and ghost may exist, but the follows of that faith would likely assume that they are largely irrelevant to daily life; you can't change the faith you face when you die, or meaningfully communicate with the dead, and gods are disconnected from mortals; they don't answer prays, grant miracles. They exist, but they you might as well be a farmer in Pennsylvania while they are farmers in Mongolia. All in all irrelevant.
"a decent abstraction"..."sake of gameplay"...
When will these excuses stop being enough?
The European religion system does not really suit China at all. Confucianism is a state ideology, not really a religion, though it does have some religious elements.
