Well, I have three games going so far. The first game as the Byzantine Empire was fairly easy and very enjoyable, all in all a very nice medieval experience. The second game I started was the Kingdom of Castille, at first things seemed to be going well as I absorbed Leon and built up my army and infrastructure, ignoring Aragons total absorption by a 2 demense emirate in the first decade of play. Well, around 1100 all hell broke loose, the Duke of Braganza was attacked by the Emirate of Sevilla which were equipped with such technologies that a battle of 2000 against 500 men (I was attacking with 2000) was massacred by the Muslims! THEN, all the other emirates seem to get together and decide that they should declare war on me as well. Well, I played on for a little while but when my kingdom was reduced to about 3 provinces and gave up.
Thats not the end my friends though, just because I gave the game the benefit of the doubt I started my Castille game again (luckily I had saved a few months before the great Muslim invasion of 1096) and decided to see if I could get through it without the great war. Well, at exactly the same time the Ducky of Braganza was attacked and once again every Emirate on the peninsula then attacks me randomly and I get slaughtered. So I try a few more times even using the die and difrules cheats which doesnt help at all so that game is done.
So then I decide ill be the Ducky of MEath and form the kingdom of ireland. All that goes to plan and I form Ireland but of course when the pope asks for a crusade I decide, why not? My piety is dropping more and more anyhow. WELL, I manage to seize whatever province is right on the coast to the left of Jerusalem and I give that to the Templar Order, but in the meantime the Fatimid kingdom has sent 3 armies of about 2000 men each to Ireland!!!! Now, even f I were able to muster enougfh troops to equal those numbers I would have been slaughtered as their technology is unbelievably superior, needless to say I was slaughtered, with Egypt owning half of Ireland!!!
The lesson being, dont go Crusading in Crusader Kings, because the Muslims will rip your poor barbarian armies to shreds with their plated armor and swords, plus im pretty sure that since most of Europe has not domesticated sheep and chickens their clothing is sub-standard and their diet is severely lacking. Oh yes my friends, I will never figure out how Europe was able to rise to such prominence.
