- Logistics report!
- Heil meine Führer! We are making 47824 infanterie equipment per day...
- Enough of that! Every time I need some useful information you start with this... I'm trying to plan Barbarossa, I don't care how many you make per day.
- Very sorry meine Führer. But as you can see, we keep an exact count of every bullet, this is good, ja?
- Yes, very. Now let's try figure out something useful... So we're producing a lot of it, right?
- Ha ha a lot of it, this is very funny meine Führer, good joke. In fact we have so much we could arm every man, woman and child on the planet. We ran out of space to stockpile it all, but luckily people from occupied territories decided to help, they appear from time to time and carry it to the woods, for safekeeping. As you can see, they like us a lot.
- So we've kind of overproduced... How did this happen?
- Well, ha ha, this is actually quite a funny story. You remember 1936 when you ordered 10 infanterie divisions, ja? So it turned out we don't have enough equipment, so you added some factories... And 5 years later, here we are ha ha.
- Hilarious. Well at least we can make more infantry divisions.
- Ha ha meine Führer, you are so funny. That Chaplin doesn't even compare ha ha. Nein, we don't have enough support equipment.
- How is this possible?! Every time I asked, you said we were making surplus!
- Yes, but we were training divisions, and they get equipment at start of training, so it kind of gets lost when we calculate average. But it is visible in total amount, you just have to memorize the number when you last checked. And to make your life even easier, down this hallway every room has a nice graph so you don't have to remember. Look how many rooms just for you. And people inside are going to be so happy when you visit every single one of those rooms...
- Ok forget it.
- Or you could just calculate it, it's really simple. You multiply the amount of equipment by the number of divisions in training, then average it over training time. Piece of sachertorte.
- Well, wouldn't it be easier to just subtract that number from balance? And also, don't we have a department for statistics and calculations? I even remember their motto: DAS COMPUTERMASCHINE is to COMPUTE, FÜHRER is to FÜHR.
- Yes, Führer, you should of course be doing all the führing. But Heinz from volkstatistics said he doesn't know your plans, therefore both computing and führing should be done by you. He also said this is much better, because of Führer error correction protocol - whatever number Führer gets is the right number, ja? Heinz is also very funny, but not as funny as you.
- So they are completely useless?
- Nein, meine Führer. You see, Churchill also has to do this, and Heinz calculated you're 7,81% better at it due to german efficiency. We can't possibly loose with that advantage. And it's good for morale.
- Not mine that's for sure. So then - eine volk, eine führer, eine spreadsheet?
- Ha ha yes, meine Führer, excellent - we are like a sheet that spreads. We will cover all of Europe under our sheet. I can't wait to tell Heinz this one.
- Ok, so back to Barbarossa - can we sustain 100 days of average attrition due to fighting and maneuver?
- Well, for trucks you don't have to worry. We have a lot of them. A LOT. We even stopped building housing, people now live in trucks, that's how many we have. And Heinz calculated that if we start all of them at once, we would melt polar icecaps immediately. That would show those Brits - if that is not wunderwaffen I don't know what is. The only problem is there is not enough oil in the world for that, but we're working on it.
- So can we manage it or not?
- It is hard to give an exact answer. And we want to be exact - that's what logistics is all about. Heinz calculated and he thinks he'll have an exact number when we get to 20 kilometres from Moscow. This is good, ja? Or if we run out of equipment, whichever happens sooner.

The funny is I felt just like this when I started playing. I'm the head of state...what do I pay an armaments minister for? .

Until every war seems to be decided by logistics.

As in pre-barbarossa, 300k excess infantry weapons. Ok amazing we will reduce production.

During Barbarossa : we have an immediate shortage of 300k infantry weapons and shortage of everything else.

You’re not playing the head of state/government. Otherwise you would get game over when said leader changes or your country changes ideology. You also wouldn’t have much direct control over the military at all beyond setting general priorities.

You’re more of a “guiding spirit” of the nation. One of the devs once described it as being like the Sir Humphrey Applebee of the country (powerful bureaucrat who guides/largely controls the government from behind the scenes).

I guess I get that now. Especially since the player can change governments, elections happen, etc.

- So what is this situation in Ukraine?
- Heil meine Führer! Situation is just peachy. Populace is enjoying our occupation policy, and we're just voting on how to rename Stalingrad after we conquer it - so far Führerburg has the most votes - Heinz from volkstatistics came up with that one.
- It's not peachy! There is a huge force of Russians behind our lines!
- Mein gott! They must have parachuted last night!
- No they haven't! They have trucks and tanks! And no one but us can use paratroops, like it's in the Geneva convention or something.
- Maybe they dug underground and waited until we pass to surprise us.
- For 2 weeks!? They obviously came from Crimea!
- Ja meine Führer, most of them are surely criminals. Gestapo will...
- A! With A at the end! CRI-ME-A!
- I apologize meine Führer, but there is no such place.
- Peninsula in the south of Ukraine - look, it's right there on the map!
- Pardon my impudence, meine Führer, but I have to ask - you ARE aware that alcohol in your medical cabinet is für disinfection only?
- GUARDS! Take him away!
(...)
- Heil meine Führer! Please excuse Kurt, it's not his fault.
- Well whose fault is it then?
- Russians, meine Führer.
- It's their fault we didn't guard our front line to Crimea?
- There is no such place... Ah, meine Führer, you didn't get the memo?
- What memo?
- Ja, that explains it. You see, we think Russians have a secret weapon. It makes our troops forget some places exist. We call it gedanken-aufwiedersehen field - anyone exposed seems unable to recall the place or even see it. Just mentioning the name causes issues. Not everyone gets exposed of course, but the rest of us just play along in order to avoid confusion.
- So how do we deal with... it?
- Well, for starters we figured we need a code name.
- I'm going to regret this - what is the code name?
- Hamburg-by-the-sea.
- Hamburg-by... But...
- Clever, ja? Enemy tries to confuse us, we confuse them even more. That's how you win the war - first in the head then in the field.
- Let me guess - Heinz thought of that one?
- Ha ha nein, meine Führer, it was Johann. But they work in the same department, so you were pretty close. If it was Heinz it would surely be funnier.
- So how do we deal with, khm, Hamburg-by-the-sea?
- Well, the planes don't seem to be affected, they see it just fine. So we thought we'd use Kriegsmarine - we asked for a U-boat to be sent to the Black sea in secret, and once in the vicinity, to check the area, thoroughly. That last part turned out to be a mistake.
- How so?
- We never heard from them again. They will be remembered as heroes of the Reich that they are, but their sacrifice was not in vain, at least we know that *something* is there.
- That our troops can't see.
- Ja, correct. Then someone from Thule society said the cause might be some kind of spell. We don't normally take them seriously, but we were pretty desperate at that moment, so we thought we might give it a try, so they sent someone.
- To check for spells?
- Ja, exactly. Heinz didn't like the guy very much, he was constantly going through our documents with suggestions, pretty annoying. We ignored him mostly. But he did check, and there were no spells. That left us with only one option.
- That you're all completely insane?
- Ha ha nein meine Führer, not completely insanse, no... Hypnosis.
- What?
- Ja, it's the only explanation - Russians are hypnotizing our troops. We tried ordering the infanterie to march south - they thought they were made out of sugar and that they would dissolve, go figure. Zuckergrenadier we call them ha ha funny isn't it?
- I'm not laughing. What about tanks? Can we use tanks? Or do our Tigers think they are made of marzipan?
- Ha ha very funny meine Führer. Nein, they are scared.
- Tanks are scared?
- Ha ha not tanks, meine Führer, cats. Of water.
- I'm confused.
- Well, we had a lot of issues with our tank crews - they would drive tanks into the sea or deep rivers, we had huge losses. Turns out how tank works is too complicated for them. But then we noticed you brilliantly named our tanks after cats, and most if not all of our tank crews know how a cat works. So we added zwei and zwei, modified the training programme, and thanks to your foresight we have now reduced our losses significantly, with very few drawbacks.
- Please tell me you don't use the same idea for Stukas...
- Ah, you would think that meine Führer, but you would be wrong. But then you are never wrong, so you would be correct, but differently. Turns out pilots are much smarter, and could get their head around the concept of air gutt, ground bad, except when landing.
- So what do we do now?
- Well, at first we thought we might just leave it. We sent Kurt to see if there was anything you might like, and he said there isn't. Probably hypnotized if you ask me. But Heinz and Johann just couldn't live with idea of disappointing the Führer, so they stormed their brains together, and came up with our next move, which is pure genius.
- I need to sit down for this one...
- We'll ask the Japanese for some troops. We think they are much less susceptible to hypnosis. Heinz calculated comparing the exposed surface area...
