Why don't we just use Battalions instead of divisions

As a separate game?
Yeah, that's what I said all along. I never intended for HoI4 to suddenly have scenarios instead of a world map, and let you control individual companies or smaller units.

Too bad PDX lost the Steel Division series, it looked precisely like what you described.
Um, no, I was talking about a Hearts of Iron game, but with scenarios instead of a world map (kinda like how scenarios work in War in the East), and having you control smaller units than divisions. I wasn't talking about an RTT.

I see, thought you wanted HoI4 to deepen its scope further.
But anyway, I'd suppose it's better to leave it at that to not stray too far oot.

The issue is that once you drop down to battalion or company level is then it is an entirely different scope. HoI4 units moving on a map would be too abstract to simulate it, and you would need RTS style game and not just one scenario. Regiment might be the smallest unit you can utilize in a focused HoI4 scenario.

One thing I really miss from hoi3 is the smaller scenarios like the winter war. It would be kinda cool if they'd made a HOI 4.5 where you'd just play minor campaigns rather than the full thing with like the German invasion of Poland, France, Barbarossa, Winter war, the african campaigns etc.

In that case I'd also love to see von lettow-vorbeck's african campaign from ww1. When I played the ww1 mod that was probably the most fun part of it, fighting as outnumbered germans to defend your little colony, shame that if I want to redo that I have to do the entire war.

It does make me sad that there will probably never be an accurate depiction of the east african campaign in hoi4. Right now it takes around 24 divisions to contain the italians in Ethiopia.

That would require making a map that's even more detailed than the Imperator map. Perhaps in HoI5?

But battalions could be used for calculating command limit, this would enncourage making smaller divisions and nerf 40 width.

which divisions existed historically with 4 brigades ? Would 3 columns of 4 in the division designer be sufficient ?

Triangular divisions had three (3) regiments. Italians were binary with two. Some early war nations (US, Japan) had square divisions which in theory had four.

Problem is there is no benefit from being strict about a regimental organization. There were some mods in the past that tried to enforce regimental units being in one column.

The other issue is units that are attached to the division. We can only add the battalion to the division. We can't break it down into companies attached to the regiments.

I have yet to find a historical division I can't fit into a 4x4 division grid, even after the inclusion of new units, like combat engineers. Soviet Artillery regiments and Soviet Mortar bn's. Actually there is one exception, the early years square divisions of the US, I ran out of battalion slots. But they get converted to triangular's before a shooting war, so its ok.

But late game is slow rn, imagine if you had thousands of small troops, what effect would it have on your cpu

I can only speak from experience using a mod that increases manpower usage per unit and enforces division limits. Even with the Russian having ~300 divisions and Germany ~150, I still have late war lag. I think the lag is more involved than just the large number of divisions. And yes, I do restrict the minors, so El Salvador doesn't have ~50 divisions. They have more like 5.

Without getting all technobabble, I'm beginning to suspect it has more to do with the amount of data that is loaded into memory and the overflow of such being written to your hard drive. Division count adds to that, but it is not the only thing.
