I enjoyed playing MP and I don't play SP. But I've taken a break from HOI4 full stop. I'm waiting for air, naval fixes since some of it is just plain ludicrous at the moment.
The reason why MP doesn't work is because Paradox isn't not investing in the MP game lobby, the server infrastructure or the interaction between lobby and the game.
I wrote a long list of suggestions on what was needed to be done, but Paradox isn't interested in this aspect of the game and just ignore any criticism, whether constructive or not.
I'll repeat the major needs here:
- Consult host/player steam profile to determine MP experience. If a host has said he wants 500h for majors and 200h for minors then only those that match requirements should be able to join
- Allow for a flexible rule base that is matched in-game. If max fort size is 6 then the game should stop you from building 7 size forts, etc. If it is historical then don't allow UK to go fascist
- Allow players to select what nations they are interested in playing before joining a game. Lobby should match for you, it shouldn't be a constant bickering about which nations are open or not
- If I want to play with mod X, Y, Z - or combinations thereof then show me games that host those mod's and don't ask me to select/start the game with them before I know if anyone is hosting with them. Obviously that should be done when the game is starting, not when you go into the lobby
I also made the suggestion that the lobby could be open sourced, since it has no actual game play value. The client will produce a hosting or client profile which is then fed to the main game. The main game can then adopt gradually to implement those features that the community is asking for. I suggested that because Paradox is totally uninterested in any uplift in the MP value of the game. If they were, why is the lobby looking nearly identical for how long? 10 years? Why?
There is quite a lot of really innovative MOD designers out there. I feel sorry for them. They invest so much time in creating really interesting ideas on how to change the game play but when it comes to Paradox they just s(h)it on it. They do nothing to help the MODs from actually being played. And that is all to do with the game lobby.
